Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 66) ➊ The meaning of { فَعَمِيَتْعَلَيْهِمُالْاَنْۢبَآءُيَوْمَىِٕذٍ …:’’عَمِيَيَعْمٰيعَمًي‘‘} (‘a) is to be blind. The intended meaning was that {’’فَعَمُوْاعَنِالْأَنْبَاءِيَوْمَئِذٍ ‘‘} “on that Day, they will be blind to the news.” For emphasis, it is stated in reverse that on that Day, all news will become dark for them, meaning they will not be able to comprehend what answer to give to this question, nor will it be possible for them to consult one another to provide an answer. The terror of that moment will be so overwhelming that they will not be able to ask each other anything. ➋ Even before this question, in response to the questions of Munkar and Nakir in the grave, the disbeliever and the hypocrite will say: [ هَاهْهَاهْلَاأَدْرِيْ ] “Alas, alas, I do not know.” [ دیکھیے أبوداوٗد، السنۃ، باب المسألۃ في القبر… : ۴۷۵۳، عن البراء بن عازب رضی اللہ عنہ ، و صححہ الألباني ] This too will be the result of the news becoming dark for them. ➌ Here it is stated: «{ فَهُمْلَايَتَسَآءَلُوْنَ}» “They will not (even) ask one another.” Elsewhere it is stated: «{ وَاَقْبَلَبَعْضُهُمْعَلٰىبَعْضٍيَّتَسَآءَلُوْنَ }»[ الصافات : ۲۷ ] “And some of them will turn to others, asking questions.” Similarly, here it is stated: “They will not be able to give any answer.” Elsewhere it is stated, they will say: «{ وَاللّٰهِرَبِّنَامَاكُنَّامُشْرِكِيْنَ }»[ الأنعام : ۲۳ ] “By Allah, our Lord, we were not among those who associated partners.” The reality of this apparent contradiction is that the Day of Resurrection is very long. During it, the disbelievers will face many stages, in which sometimes they will remain silent, sometimes they will deny their crime, sometimes they will confess and say that misfortune has overcome them, sometimes they will question one another, and sometimes they will not be able to question one another. Therefore, due to the different contexts, there is no real contradiction in these verses. See also Surah Al-An’am (22, 23).
