فَأَلْقَوْا۟ حِبَالَهُمْ وَعِصِيَّهُمْ وَقَالُوا۟ بِعِزَّةِ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّا لَنَحْنُ ٱلْغَـٰلِبُونَ ﴿44﴾
So they threw their ropes and their sticks, and said: "By the might of Fir‘aun (Pharaoh), it is we who will certainly win!"
فَأَلْقَوْا۟ fa-alqaw So they threw
حِبَالَهُمْ ḥibālahum their ropes
وَعِصِيَّهُمْ waʿiṣiyyahum and their staffs
وَقَالُوا۟ waqālū and said
بِعِزَّةِ biʿizzati By the might
فِرْعَوْنَ fir'ʿawna (of) Firaun
إِنَّا innā indeed, we
لَنَحْنُ lanaḥnu surely, we
ٱلْغَـٰلِبُونَ l-ghālibūna (are) the victorious

(Ayah 44) { وَ قَالُوْا بِعِزَّةِ فِرْعَوْنَ … :} They swore by the honor of Pharaoh to show him respect, saying that we will surely win. The purpose of the magicians was to please Pharaoh and to intimidate Musa (peace be upon him). In the age of ignorance, people used to swear such oaths; in Islam, this has been prohibited. Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: [ أَلاَ إِنَّ اللّٰهَ يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوْا بِآبَائِكُمْ مَنْ كَانَ حَالِفًا فَلْيَحْلِفْ بِاللّٰهِ أَوْ لِيَصْمُتْ ] [ بخاری، الأیمان والنذور، باب لا تحلفوا بآبائکم : ۶۶۴۶ ] "Beware! Allah forbids you from swearing by your fathers. Whoever has to swear, let him swear by Allah or remain silent." Despite this, nowadays some Muslims are not satisfied with swearing by Allah's essence or attributes, but rather swear by their spiritual guide or the grave of some saint, or according to common custom say, "I swear by you" or "I swear by your head," etc. In this way, they express the greatness of others. Just as swearing a false oath by Allah is a sin, swearing a true oath by the creation is an even greater sin.
