Surah Ash-Shu'araa (26) — Ayah 18

(Ayah 19,18) {قَالَ اَلَمْ نُرَبِّكَ فِيْنَا وَلِيْدًا …:} Here, the lengthy details are omitted, leaving it to the listener’s understanding, that Allah granted them such awe that both of them reached Pharaoh’s court without any army or weapons, and none of his soldiers or guards dared to stop them. Upon reaching the court, they delivered Allah’s message to him in the presence of all his chiefs. Pharaoh realized from Musa’s (peace be upon him) conversation that he was the real Messenger, and Harun was only an assistant, so he addressed Musa (peace be upon him) alone and did not speak to Harun (peace be upon him). While speaking to Musa (peace be upon him), he avoided discussing his invitation and instead used the common tactics of rulers, the first of which was to embarrass him by reminding him of the favor of his upbringing. Thus, he said: “Did we not raise you among us as a child, and you stayed among us for many years of your life?” The second tactic was to prove him a criminal and frighten him with punishment. He thought that, either out of embarrassment for the favor of upbringing or out of fear for his life, he would remain silent. Thus, he said: “And you did that deed of yours which you did, and you are among the ungrateful,” meaning, despite all our favors, you killed one of our men, which was certainly your ingratitude. {’’ اَلَمْ نُرَبِّكَ فِيْنَا ‘‘} (Did we not raise you among us) — these words somewhat support the view of those commentators and historians who believe that this Pharaoh was not the one in whose house Musa (peace be upon him) was raised, but rather his son, because if it had been the same one, he would have said, “Did I not raise you, and you stayed with me for many years?” (And Allah knows best)
