Surah Al-Furqaan (25) — Ayah 65

وَٱلَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا ٱصْرِفْ عَنَّا عَذَابَ جَهَنَّمَ ۖ إِنَّ عَذَابَهَا كَانَ غَرَامًا ﴿65﴾
And those who say: "Our Lord! Avert from us the torment of Hell. Verily its torment is ever an inseparable, permanent punishment."
وَٱلَّذِينَ wa-alladhīna And those who
يَقُولُونَ yaqūlūna say
رَبَّنَا rabbanā Our Lord
ٱصْرِفْ iṣ'rif Avert
عَنَّا ʿannā from us
عَذَابَ ʿadhāba the punishment
جَهَنَّمَ ۖ jahannama (of) Hell
إِنَّ inna Indeed
عَذَابَهَا ʿadhābahā its punishment
كَانَ kāna is
غَرَامًا gharāman inseparable

(Ayah 65) ➊ { وَ الَّذِيْنَ يَقُوْلُوْنَ رَبَّنَا اصْرِفْ عَنَّا … :} Despite correcting their dealings with both creation and the Creator, there is not even a trace of pride or self-admiration in them; rather, due to their shortcomings, they always consider themselves deserving of punishment and constantly seek Allah’s mercy and pardon, and desire to be saved from the torment of Hell. In Surah Al-Mu’minun, Ayah (60): «{ وَ الَّذِيْنَ يُؤْتُوْنَ مَاۤ اٰتَوْا وَّ قُلُوْبُهُمْ وَجِلَةٌ (And those who give what they give while their hearts are fearful) this very state of theirs is described, and in Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Ayah (17, 18): «{ كَانُوْا قَلِيْلًا مِّنَ الَّيْلِ مَا يَهْجَعُوْنَ (17) وَ بِالْاَسْحَارِ هُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرُوْنَ (They used to sleep but little of the night, and in the hours before dawn they would seek forgiveness) the reason for seeking forgiveness at the time of suhoor after standing in prayer all night is also this very feeling.
{اِنَّ عَذَابَهَا كَانَ غَرَامًا : ’’ غَرَامًا ‘‘} “Clinging” — just as a debtor’s creditor does not leave him alone until the debt is paid, as the poet has said:
{سَتَعْلَمُ لَيْلٰي أَيَّ دَيْنٍ تَدَانَيَتْ ¤ وَ أَيَّ غَرِيْمٍ فِي التَّقَاضِيْ غَرِيْمُهَا}
“Layla will know what kind of debt she has taken on, and how persistent her creditor is in demanding it.”
This phrase can be the statement of the servants of the Most Merciful or the command of the Most Merciful Lord.
