Surah Al-Furqaan (25) — Ayah 58

وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى ٱلْحَىِّ ٱلَّذِى لَا يَمُوتُ وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِهِۦ ۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِهِۦ بِذُنُوبِ عِبَادِهِۦ خَبِيرًا ﴿58﴾
And put your trust (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) in the Ever Living One Who dies not, and glorify His Praises, and Sufficient is He as the All-Knower of the sins of His slaves,
وَتَوَكَّلْ watawakkal And put your trust
عَلَى ʿalā in
ٱلْحَىِّ l-ḥayi the Ever-Living
ٱلَّذِى alladhī the One Who
لَا does not die
يَمُوتُ yamūtu does not die
وَسَبِّحْ wasabbiḥ and glorify
بِحَمْدِهِۦ ۚ biḥamdihi with His Praise
وَكَفَىٰ wakafā And sufficient is
بِهِۦ bihi He
بِذُنُوبِ bidhunūbi regarding the sins
عِبَادِهِۦ ʿibādihi (of) His slaves
خَبِيرًا khabīran All-Aware

(Ayah 58) ➊ { وَ تَوَكَّلْ عَلَى الْحَيِّ الَّذِيْ لَا يَمُوْتُ :} After stating that all disbelievers are united in their enmity against you and are helpers of one another, the way to protect yourself from their enmity and harm is explained: be patient over their enmity, fear no one, hope from no one, and place your trust in Him who is always living and never dies. He alone will protect you in every way, as He said: «{ يٰۤاَيُّهَا الرَّسُوْلُ بَلِّغْ مَاۤ اُنْزِلَ اِلَيْكَ مِنْ رَّبِّكَ وَ اِنْ لَّمْ تَفْعَلْ فَمَا بَلَّغْتَ رِسَالَتَهٗ وَ اللّٰهُ يَعْصِمُكَ مِنَ النَّاسِ [ المائدۃ : ۶۷ ] "O Messenger! Convey what has been revealed to you from your Lord, and if you do not, then you have not conveyed His message. And Allah will protect you from the people." Some scholars have said, after this, it does not befit any intelligent person to place trust in any creature, because creatures are destined to die. Remember, tawakkul does not mean abandoning means, rather tawakkul means that after adopting all possible means according to Allah’s command, trust is placed only in Allah.

➋ In this sentence, along with mentioning two attributes of Allah, {’’ الْحَيِّ ‘‘} and {’’ الَّذِيْ لَا يَمُوْتُ ‘‘}, there is also a rebuke to the polytheists, that they worship and consider as their provider and helper those beings who are neither alive nor safe from death, as He said: « وَ الَّذِيْنَ يَدْعُوْنَ مِنْ دُوْنِ اللّٰهِ لَا يَخْلُقُوْنَ شَيْـًٔا وَّ هُمْ يُخْلَقُوْنَ (20) اَمْوَاتٌ غَيْرُ اَحْيَآءٍ وَ مَا يَشْعُرُوْنَ اَيَّانَ يُبْعَثُوْنَ » [ النحل : ۲۰، ۲۱ ] "And those whom they invoke besides Allah create nothing, while they themselves are created. They are dead, not alive, and they do not know when they will be resurrected."

{ وَ سَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِهٖ :} Tasbih means to negate from Allah every attribute that does not befit His majesty, the foremost of which is having any partner, and hamd means to affirm for Him every perfection that befits His majesty. That is, along with tawakkul on Allah, His tasbih and tahmid will protect you from every enemy. Whatever command Allah has given to His Messenger is also for the entire ummah, unless it is proven that it is specific to him.

{ وَ كَفٰى بِهٖ بِذُنُوْبِ عِبَادِهٖ خَبِيْرًا :} There are two generalities in this: all servants and all their sins, and in {’’ خَبِيْرَا ‘‘}, due to the emphasis, "knowledge" is also general, and in the emphasis of the doer of {’’ كَفٰى ‘‘} with "ba", there is also generality in sufficiency, meaning He is fully sufficient in being completely aware of all the sins of all His servants, because nothing is hidden from Him. See Surah Al-An'am (59) and Surah Saba (3).

➎ In this sentence, there is also a warning and threat for the disbelievers, just as a superior says to his subordinate: I am watching whatever you are doing.
