Surah Al-Furqaan (25) — Ayah 19

فَقَدْ كَذَّبُوكُم بِمَا تَقُولُونَ فَمَا تَسْتَطِيعُونَ صَرْفًا وَلَا نَصْرًا ۚ وَمَن يَظْلِم مِّنكُمْ نُذِقْهُ عَذَابًا كَبِيرًا ﴿19﴾
Thus they (false gods - all deities other than Allâh) will belie you (polytheists) regarding what you say (that they are gods besides Allâh): then you can neither avert (the punishment), nor get help. And whoever among you does wrong (i.e. sets up rivals to Allâh), We shall make him taste a great torment.
فَقَدْ faqad So verily
كَذَّبُوكُم kadhabūkum they deny you
بِمَا bimā in what
تَقُولُونَ taqūlūna you say
فَمَا famā so not
تَسْتَطِيعُونَ tastaṭīʿūna you are able
صَرْفًۭا ṣarfan (to) avert
وَلَا walā and not
نَصْرًۭا ۚ naṣran (to) help
وَمَن waman And whoever
يَظْلِم yaẓlim does wrong
مِّنكُمْ minkum among you
نُذِقْهُ nudhiq'hu We will make him taste
عَذَابًۭا ʿadhāban a punishment
كَبِيرًۭا kabīran great

(Ayah 19) ➊ { فَقَدْ كَذَّبُوْكُمْ بِمَا تَقُوْلُوْنَ :} This is the statement of Allah Almighty, which He will address to the polytheists, saying that those whom you had made deities have denied your claim and have disassociated themselves from you. On the Day of Resurrection, all self-made deities will disown their worshippers and become their enemies; this has been mentioned in several places in the Qur’an. See Surah Yunus (28), An-Nahl (86), Maryam (82), Fatir (13, 14), and Al-Ahqaf (6).
{فَمَا تَسْتَطِيْعُوْنَ۠ صَرْفًا وَّ لَا نَصْرًا:} That is, those from whom you expected help have become your enemies, so now you cannot escape the punishment in any way; neither can you avert it from yourselves through any intercession or ransom, nor can you or anyone else come to your aid.
{ وَ مَنْ يَّظْلِمْ مِّنْكُمْ نُذِقْهُ عَذَابًا كَبِيْرًا :} By “wrongdoing” is meant shirk (associating partners with Allah); see the explanation of Surah Al-An’am, Ayah (82): «{ اَلَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا وَ لَمْ يَلْبِسُوْۤا اِيْمَانَهُمْ بِظُلْمٍ, and by “great punishment” is meant Hell. The meaning is that all of you have committed wrongdoing, therefore We will make you taste the punishment of Hell, i.e., the reason for being thrown into Hell has been stated.
