وَلَقَدْ أَنزَلْنَآ إِلَيْكُمْ ءَايَـٰتٍ مُّبَيِّنَـٰتٍ وَمَثَلًا مِّنَ ٱلَّذِينَ خَلَوْا۟ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ وَمَوْعِظَةً لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ ﴿34﴾
And indeed We have sent down for you Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) that make things plain, and the example of those who passed away before you, and an admonition for those who are Al-Muttaqûn (the pious - See V.2:2).
وَلَقَدْ walaqad And verily
أَنزَلْنَآ anzalnā We have sent down
إِلَيْكُمْ ilaykum to you
ءَايَـٰتٍۢ āyātin Verses
مُّبَيِّنَـٰتٍۢ mubayyinātin clear
وَمَثَلًۭا wamathalan and an example
مِّنَ mina of
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who
خَلَوْا۟ khalaw passed away
مِن min before you
قَبْلِكُمْ qablikum before you
وَمَوْعِظَةًۭ wamawʿiẓatan and an admonition
لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ lil'muttaqīna for those who fear (Allah)

(Ayah 34) ➊ {وَ لَقَدْ اَنْزَلْنَاۤ اِلَيْكُمْ اٰيٰتٍ مُّبَيِّنٰتٍ: ’’ مُبَيِّنٰتٍ ‘‘} is the plural of {’’مُبَيِّنَةٌ‘‘}, which is an active participle from the form II verb. This form is used for both intransitive and transitive meanings, and here both meanings can be intended together, that is, the verses of Allah are clear and easily understandable, and they also make Allah’s commands and instructions very clear. By these verses are meant all the verses revealed to the Prophet (peace be upon him), although first and foremost the verses and commands mentioned in this surah are intended, as He said: «{ سُوْرَةٌ اَنْزَلْنٰهَا وَ فَرَضْنٰهَا وَ اَنْزَلْنَا فِيْهَاۤ اٰيٰتٍۭ بَيِّنٰتٍ لَّعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُوْنَ [ النور : ۱ ] “(This is) a great surah, We have sent it down and We have made it obligatory, and We have sent down in it clear verses, so that you may take heed.”
➋ The meaning of { وَ مَثَلًا مِّنَ الَّذِيْنَ خَلَوْا مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ : ’’أَيْ وَ أَنْزَلْنَا مَثَلًا مِنَ الَّذِيْنَ خَلَوْا مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ۔‘‘ ’’ مَثَلًا ‘‘} is parable, that thing which resembles another thing, a state of someone that is similar to the state of another, a characteristic of something, and a strange story. That is, We have sent down to you verses that explain clearly, and We have revealed some of the conditions of the former people that are similar to your conditions. This includes those commands and limits that were made obligatory on previous nations just as they are on the Muslim Ummah, such as the punishment for adultery, retribution, prevention of the spread of indecency, etc., and the conditions and events of previous nations that are similar to the conditions of this Ummah, such as the incident of slander against Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), the slander of the Jews against Maryam (peace be upon her), and the incident of the wife of the Aziz of Egypt slandering Yusuf (peace be upon him), which are similar to each other. In all three incidents, Allah has established the chastity of His believing servants in the Quran until the Day of Judgment, and has made clear the falsehood of the slanderers forever.
{ وَ مَوْعِظَةً لِّلْمُتَّقِيْنَ۠ : ’’ أَيْ وَ أَنْزَلْنَا مَوْعِظَةً ‘‘} That is, We have sent down a great admonition for those who fear and avoid disobedience, because whoever does not fear Allah will not benefit from these verses.
