Surah Al-Muminoon (23) — Ayah 66

قَدْ كَانَتْ ءَايَـٰتِى تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْكُمْ فَكُنتُمْ عَلَىٰٓ أَعْقَـٰبِكُمْ تَنكِصُونَ ﴿66﴾
Indeed My Verses used to be recited to you, but you used to turn back on your heels (denying them, and refusing with hatred to listen to them).
قَدْ qad Verily
كَانَتْ kānat were
ءَايَـٰتِى āyātī My Verses
تُتْلَىٰ tut'lā recited
عَلَيْكُمْ ʿalaykum to you
فَكُنتُمْ fakuntum but you used
عَلَىٰٓ ʿalā (to) on
أَعْقَـٰبِكُمْ aʿqābikum your heels
تَنكِصُونَ tankiṣūna turn back

(Ayah 66) {قَدْ كَانَتْ اٰيٰتِيْ تُتْلٰى عَلَيْكُمْ …: ’’نَكَصَ‘‘} (ض، ن) Generally refers to withdrawing from a good deed. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) explained the meaning of {’’ تَنْكِصُوْنَ ‘‘} as {’’تُدْبِرُوْنَ‘‘} (you used to turn back). (Tabari) That is, this punishment is the result of your own evil deeds, that when My verses were recited before you, you would turn back on your heels, you did not even tolerate listening.
