Surah Al-Muminoon (23) — Ayah 25

(Ayah 25) ➊ { اِنْ هُوَ اِلَّا رَجُلٌۢ بِهٖ جِنَّةٌ:’’ جِنَّةٌ ‘‘} Madness, insanity. Their fifth accusation is this slander that they made, meaning his claim that Allah Almighty has made him a Messenger, then saying things we have never heard before, such as: do not worship idols, worship only Allah, and being engaged day and night in preaching this, with no concern for business, nor any fear of the opposition of the entire nation. In reality, he is afflicted with a kind of madness, insanity, which makes him do all this. In fact, in the eyes of a believer, whatever a disbeliever does is utter madness, as he strives all his life for a few days of worldly life, has no concern for eternal life, and calls upon and worships those who neither created anything nor have any power. Similarly, in the eyes of a disbeliever, the actions of a believer are madness, as he leaves the immediate for the deferred, and out of fear of an unseen Lord, abandons his beloved desires. In {’’ جِنَّةٌ ‘‘}, the tanween is for indefiniteness, meaning he is afflicted with a kind of madness. Instead of calling him completely insane, they said "some madness," so that not everyone would reject their claim outright, thinking how could such a perfectly intelligent person be insane? Ibn Juzayy says: "Look at the contradiction in their statements; just now they were saying that this person (possesses such abilities that) he wants to gain superiority over you, and now they say he is afflicted with some madness."
➋ { فَتَرَبَّصُوْا بِهٖ حَتّٰى حِيْنٍ :} Meaning, wait for some time regarding him, until he is caught up in some twist of fate, or he dies and you are rid of him.
