وَنُوحًا إِذْ نَادَىٰ مِن قَبْلُ فَٱسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُۥ فَنَجَّيْنَـٰهُ وَأَهْلَهُۥ مِنَ ٱلْكَرْبِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ ﴿76﴾
And (remember) Nûh (Noah), when he cried (to Us) aforetime. We answered his invocation and saved him and his family from the great distress.
وَنُوحًا wanūḥan And Nuh
إِذْ idh when
نَادَىٰ nādā he called
مِن min before
قَبْلُ qablu before
فَٱسْتَجَبْنَا fa-is'tajabnā so We responded
لَهُۥ lahu to him
فَنَجَّيْنَـٰهُ fanajjaynāhu and We saved him
وَأَهْلَهُۥ wa-ahlahu and his family
مِنَ mina from
ٱلْكَرْبِ l-karbi the affliction
ٱلْعَظِيمِ l-ʿaẓīmi [the] great

(Ayah 77,76) ➊ After saving Ibrahim (peace be upon him) from the fire, the deliverance of Nuh (peace be upon him) from the flood of water is mentioned.
{ وَ نُوْحًا اِذْ نَادٰى مِنْ قَبْلُ …:} The supplication of Nuh (peace be upon him) is mentioned in detail in Surah Nuh (26 to 28); similarly, in Surah Qamar: «{ فَدَعَا رَبَّهٗۤ اَنِّيْ مَغْلُوْبٌ فَانْتَصِرْ [ القمر :۱۰] "So he called upon his Lord: 'Indeed, I am overpowered, so help [me].'"
➌ By { فَنَجَّيْنٰهُ وَ اَهْلَهٗ : ’’ اَهْلَهٗ ‘‘} is meant the rest of his household except for his polytheist son and wife. Regarding the son, see Surah Hud (40 to 43), and regarding the wife, Surah Tahrim (10).
➍ The meaning of {مِنَ الْكَرْبِ الْعَظِيْمِ: ’’ الْكَرْبِ ‘‘} is {’’أَقْصَي الْغَمِّ ‘‘}, that is, grief that has reached its utmost limit. By {’’ الْكَرْبِ الْعَظِيْمِ ‘‘} is meant the continuous opposition, mistreatment, harm, mockery, and threats of stoning by the disbelievers against Nuh (peace be upon him) for nine hundred and fifty years, which he complained of before Allah Almighty, as mentioned from verse (5) to verse (24) of Surah Nuh, and also mentioned in Surah Hud (38) and Ash-Shu'ara (116). The flood with waves like mountains is also meant, which, by Allah's command, did not leave a single polytheist living on earth.
{ فَاَغْرَقْنٰهُمْ اَجْمَعِيْنَ :} For its details, see Surah Hud (37 to 49).
