وَوَهَبْنَا لَهُۥٓ إِسْحَـٰقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ نَافِلَةً ۖ وَكُلًّا جَعَلْنَا صَـٰلِحِينَ ﴿72﴾
And We bestowed upon him Ishâq (Isaac), and (a grandson) Ya‘qûb (Jacob). Each one We made righteous.
وَوَهَبْنَا wawahabnā And We bestowed
لَهُۥٓ lahu on him
إِسْحَـٰقَ is'ḥāqa Isaac
وَيَعْقُوبَ wayaʿqūba and Yaqub
نَافِلَةًۭ ۖ nāfilatan (in) addition
وَكُلًّۭا wakullan and all
جَعَلْنَا jaʿalnā We made
صَـٰلِحِينَ ṣāliḥīna righteous

(Ayah 72) ➊ The meaning of {وَ وَهَبْنَا لَهٗۤ اِسْحٰقَ وَ يَعْقُوْبَ نَافِلَةً:’’ نَافِلَةً ‘‘} is an extra gift. There are two meanings of this verse: one is that We granted him Ishaq, and as an additional favor, We granted him Yaqub (his grandson). The second meaning is that We granted him both Ishaq and Yaqub as an extra favor. The commentator Ibn Ashur (may Allah have mercy on him) has given a very excellent explanation of this, that in Surah As-Saffat (100) it is mentioned that when Ibrahim (peace be upon him) set out for migration, he prayed to Allah: «{ رَبِّ هَبْ لِيْ مِنَ الصّٰلِحِيْنَ "O my Lord! Grant me (a son) who will be among the righteous." It was said: «{ فَبَشَّرْنٰهُ بِغُلٰمٍ حَلِيْمٍ [ الصافات : ۱۰۱ ] "So We gave him good tidings of a forbearing boy." This forbearing boy was Ismail (peace be upon him), whose sacrifice is also mentioned at this place. The prayer of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was accepted with the birth of Ismail (peace be upon him), and after that, when Allah granted Ishaq and Yaqub (peace be upon them), He granted them without any prayer or expectation, so both were considered an extra gift, who were granted after Ismail (peace be upon him) without being asked for. The glad tidings of both were also given together: «{ فَبَشَّرْنٰهَابِاِسْحٰقَ وَ مِنْ وَّرَآءِ اِسْحٰقَ يَعْقُوْبَ [ ھود : ۷۱ ] "So We gave her (Sarah) good tidings of Ishaq and after Ishaq, of Yaqub."
➋ By {وَ كُلًّا جَعَلْنَا صٰلِحِيْنَ : ’’ كُلًّا ‘‘} is meant Ibrahim, Ishaq, and Yaqub (peace be upon them), because the last mention is of them. The mention of Lut (peace be upon him) is in the context of his association with Ibrahim (peace be upon him); his separate mention is coming ahead. [ التحریر والتنویر ] {’’صٰلِحِيْنَ ‘‘} Reform is the opposite of corruption. {’’ صَلَحَ ‘‘} (F, K) means to be correct, that is, We made all these prophets completely obedient to Us with correct belief and correct action.
