Surah Al-Anbiyaa (21) — Ayah 112

قَـٰلَ رَبِّ ٱحْكُم بِٱلْحَقِّ ۗ وَرَبُّنَا ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ ٱلْمُسْتَعَانُ عَلَىٰ مَا تَصِفُونَ ﴿112﴾
He (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: "My Lord! Judge You in truth! Our Lord is the Most Gracious, Whose Help is to be sought against that which you attribute (unto Allâh that He has offspring, and unto Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم that he is a sorcerer, and unto the Qur’ân that it is poetry)!"
قَـٰلَ qāla He said
رَبِّ rabbi My Lord
ٱحْكُم uḥ'kum judge
بِٱلْحَقِّ ۗ bil-ḥaqi in truth
وَرَبُّنَا warabbunā And our Lord
ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ l-raḥmānu (is) the Most Gracious
ٱلْمُسْتَعَانُ l-mus'taʿānu the One Whose help is sought
عَلَىٰ ʿalā against
مَا what
تَصِفُونَ taṣifūna you attribute

(Ayah 112) ➊ { قٰلَ رَبِّ احْكُمْ بِالْحَقِّ …:} When the previous nations of the prophets denied the truth, they made a supplication to Allah Most High similar to the supplication mentioned in this verse. For example, Shu‘ayb (peace be upon him) supplicated: «{ رَبَّنَا افْتَحْ بَيْنَنَا وَ بَيْنَ قَوْمِنَا بِالْحَقِّ وَ اَنْتَ خَيْرُ الْفٰتِحِيْنَ [ الأعراف : ۸۹ ] “Our Lord! Decide between us and our people in truth, and You are the best of those who give decision.” And regarding all those prophets whose people threatened to expel them from their towns if they did not abandon their faith, it is said: «{ وَ اسْتَفْتَحُوْا وَ خَابَ كُلُّ جَبَّارٍ عَنِيْدٍ [ إبراہیم : ۱۵ ] “And they sought judgment, and every obstinate, arrogant tyrant was disappointed.”
In {’’ قٰلَ رَبِّ احْكُمْ ‘‘} of {’’ قٰلَ ‘‘}, there are two recitations: one is with the imperative form {’’ قُلْ ‘‘}, which means that Allah Most High is commanding the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) to say what is mentioned in this verse. The second recitation, which is common among us, is in the past tense {’’ قَالَ ‘‘}, which means “he said.” In this case, the meaning is that Allah Most High says that our Messenger also said to Us, due to the denials and attempts of exile by the disbelievers, what is mentioned in this verse. From this, the lesson is derived that any caller to the truth, when faced with such circumstances, should make this supplication.
➋ In the script of the Noble Qur’an, the first word of this verse is written without an alif as {’’ قٰلَ ‘‘}, which allows for both readings, {’’ قُلْ ‘‘} and {’’ قَالَ ‘‘}, just as in {’’ مٰلِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّيْنِ ‘‘} there is allowance for both {’’ مَلِكِ ‘‘} and {’’ مَالِكِ ‘‘}, and this is a perfection of the script of the Noble Qur’an.
