Surah Taa-Haa (20) — Ayah 95
قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكَ يَـٰسَـٰمِرِىُّ ﴿95﴾

[Mûsâ (Moses)] said: "And what is the matter with you. O Sâmirî? (i.e. why did you do so?)"

(Ayah 95){قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكَ يٰسَامِرِيُّ :} The verbal and practical intensity with which Harun (peace be upon him) was questioned is not seen when questioning Samiri, because one gets angrier with their own, and when they present reasonable excuses, not only does the anger subside but the grief of the heart also disappears, and even prayers are made for them. Thus, after hearing Harun’s (peace be upon him) words, Musa (peace be upon him) prayed: «{ رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِيْ وَ لِاَخِيْ وَ اَدْخِلْنَا فِيْ رَحْمَتِكَ وَ اَنْتَ اَرْحَمُ الرّٰحِمِيْنَ }» [ الأعراف : ۱۵۱ ] “O my Lord! Forgive me and my brother and admit us into Your mercy, and You are the Most Merciful of those who show mercy.”
In contrast, Samiri’s ill-intent was already known, so although the questioning was not as intense, upon hearing his excuse for the sin—which was even worse than the sin itself—he was given such a punishment that perhaps no one else had ever received. Its example is the boycott of three sincere Muslims who stayed behind from the army in the Battle of Tabuk, the result of which, due to their sincerity and trustworthiness, was the acceptance of their repentance and their everlasting mention in the Quran as a form of honor. In contrast, the hypocrites’ excuses are apparently accepted, but after that, Allah forbids taking them along in any battle, performing their funeral prayer, or standing at their graves, and gives them the warning of the worst punishment in the Hereafter.
