سُوْرَةُ طٰهٰ

Surah Taa-Haa (20) — Ayah 132

وَأْمُرْ أَهْلَكَ بِٱلصَّلَوٰةِ وَٱصْطَبِرْ عَلَيْهَا ۖ لَا نَسْـَٔلُكَ رِزْقًا ۖ نَّحْنُ نَرْزُقُكَ ۗ وَٱلْعَـٰقِبَةُ لِلتَّقْوَىٰ ﴿132﴾
And enjoin As-Salât (the prayer) on your family, and be patient in offering them [i.e. the Salât (prayers)]. We ask not of you a provision (i.e. to give Us something: money): We provide for you. And the good end (i.e. Paradise) is for the Muttaqûn (the pious - See V.2:2).
وَأْمُرْ wamur And enjoin
أَهْلَكَ ahlaka (on) your family
بِٱلصَّلَوٰةِ bil-ṣalati the prayer
وَٱصْطَبِرْ wa-iṣ'ṭabir and be steadfast
عَلَيْهَا ۖ ʿalayhā therein
لَا Not
نَسْـَٔلُكَ nasaluka We ask you
رِزْقًۭا ۖ riz'qan (for) provision
نَّحْنُ naḥnu We
نَرْزُقُكَ ۗ narzuquka provide (for) you
وَٱلْعَـٰقِبَةُ wal-ʿāqibatu and the outcome
لِلتَّقْوَىٰ lilttaqwā (is) for the righteous[ness]

(Ayah 132) ➊ {وَ اْمُرْ اَهْلَكَ بِالصَّلٰوةِ …: ’’ اصْطَبِرْ ‘‘ ’’صَبَرَ يَصْبِرُ‘‘} is the imperative form from the verb pattern ifti‘āl; the tā’ has been changed to ṭā’, and the addition of letters is for emphasis, which is why it is translated as “be steadfastly observant.” In these verses, apparently all the commands are addressed to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), but every individual of the ummah is addressed by virtue of following the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: [ مُرُوْا أَوْلَادَكُمْ بِالصَّلَاةِ وَهُمْ أَبْنَاءُ سَبْعِ سِنِيْنَ وَاضْرِبُوْهُمْ عَلَيْهَا وَهُمْ أَبْنَاءُ عَشْرِ سِنِيْنَ وَفَرِّقُوْا بَيْنَهُمْ فِي الْمَضَاجِعِ ] [ أبوداوٗد، الصلاۃ، باب متٰی یؤمر الغلام بالصلاۃ : ۴۹۵، عن عبد اللہ بن عمرو رضی اللہ عنھما ] “Command your children to pray when they are seven years old, and strike them for it when they are ten years old, and separate their beds.” That is, instead of your family members looking towards the luxuries and comforts of worldly people, you should emphasize prayer to them and yourself be steadfast in it. Because this will connect them and you to Allah Almighty, and will instill in you patience and contentment with lawful provision, no matter how little it may be in quantity, and true richness is in patience and patience and contentment, not in wealth and property.

{ لَا نَسْـَٔلُكَ رِزْقًا …: } Generally, due to earning a livelihood, a person becomes lazy in the worship of Allah Almighty and in prayer, so it is said, Our demand from you is not to earn a livelihood but to worship and pray; We will provide you with sustenance. Living life according to Allah’s commands is called worship; Allah Almighty did not create man to earn a livelihood, but to live according to His commands. If he lives as a servant (slave) of Allah according to His commands, he will never lack provision. It is said: «{ وَ مَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَ الْاِنْسَ اِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُوْنِ (56) مَاۤ اُرِيْدُ مِنْهُمْ مِّنْ رِّزْقٍ وَّ مَاۤ اُرِيْدُ اَنْ يُّطْعِمُوْنِ(57) اِنَّ اللّٰهَ هُوَ الرَّزَّاقُ ذُو الْقُوَّةِ الْمَتِيْنُ [ الذاریات : ۵۶ تا ۵۸ ] “And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me. I do not want any provision from them, nor do I want them to feed Me. Indeed, Allah is the Provider, the Possessor of strength, the Firm.” The cure for man’s impatience, stinginess, and greed is guarding and persevering in prayer. See Surah al-Ma‘ārij (19–35). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: [ إِنَّ اللّٰهَ تَعَالٰی يَقُوْلُ يَا ابْنَ آدَمَ ! تَفَرَّغْ لِعِبَادَتِيْ أَمْلَأْ صَدْرَكَ غِنًی وَأَسُدَّ فَقْرَكَ وَإِلاَّ تَفْعَلْ مَلَأْتُ يَدَيْكَ شُغْلاً وَلَمْ أَسُدَّ فَقْرَكَ] [ترمذي، صفۃ القیامۃ، باب أحادیث ابتلینا بالضراء… : ۲۴۶۶، عن أبي ھریرۃ رضی اللہ عنہ ] “Allah Almighty says: O son of Adam! Devote yourself fully to My worship, (and) I will fill your heart with richness and remove your poverty, but if you do not do so, I will fill your hands with preoccupation and will not remove your poverty.”

{وَ الْعَاقِبَةُ لِلتَّقْوٰى :} That is, even if their days in the world pass with hardship, in the Hereafter everlasting comfort and luxury will be theirs. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: [ مَنْ كَانَتِ الْآخِرَةُ هَمَّهٗ جَعَلَ اللّٰهُ غِنَاهُ فِيْ قَلْبِهٖ وَجَمَعَ لَهٗ شَمْلَهٗ وَأَتَتْهُ الدُّنْيَا وَهِيَ رَاغِمَةٌ وَمَنْ كَانَتِ الدُّنْيَا هَمَّهٗ جَعَلَ اللّٰهُ فَقْرَهُ بَيْنَ عَيْنَيْهٖ وَفَرَّقَ عَلَيْهِ شَمْلَهٗ وَلَمْ يَأْتِهٖ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا إِلاَّ مَا قُدِّرَ لَهٗ ] [ ترمذي، صفۃ القیامۃ، باب أحادیث ابتلینا بالضراء… : ۲۴۶۵، عن أنس بن مالک رضی اللہ عنہ ] “Whoever’s concern is only the Hereafter, Allah Almighty places richness in his heart and gathers his affairs for him, and the world comes to him humbled. And whoever’s concern is only the world, Allah Almighty places poverty before his eyes and scatters his affairs, and he gets nothing of the world except what is decreed for him.” From this it is known that in both this world and the Hereafter, a good end is only for taqwa (God-consciousness).
