Say (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم): "Whoever is an enemy to Jibrîl (Gabriel) (let him die in his fury), for indeed he has brought it (this Qur’ân) down to your heart by Allâh’s Permission, confirming what came before it [i.e. the Taurât (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] and guidance and glad tidings for the believers.

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 98,97) ➊ The Jews went so far in their enmity toward the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that they even declared Jibreel (peace be upon him) to be their enemy, because he was the one who brought revelation to you. In their view, he should have brought revelation to someone from the Children of Israel. For this, they made an excuse, so Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that the Jews came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Abu al-Qasim! We will ask you a few questions; if you answer them, we will recognize that you are truly a prophet and we will become your followers." Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that you took a covenant from them just as Israel (peace be upon him) took from his sons, and you (peace and blessings be upon him) even said to them that Allah is a witness over what we are saying. (After receiving the correct answers to the questions) the Jews said: "Alright, tell us, which angel comes to you? Because every prophet has an angel who brings news to him. This is the last thing; if you tell us, we will become your followers." You (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is Jibreel." They said: "He descends with fighting and war; he is our enemy. If you had said Mika'il, we would have believed, because he brings vegetation, rain, and mercy." So Allah revealed these verses: «{ قُلْ مَنْ كَانَ عَدُوًّا لِّجِبْرِيْلَ … }» [ تفسیر ابن ابی حاتم : 252/1، ح : ۹۵۳، بسند حسن ]
Similarly, in Sahih Bukhari, it is mentioned that Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) asked you three questions, and you said: "Just now Jibreel (peace be upon him) has informed me of their answers." So they said: "He is the enemy of the Jews among the angels." Upon this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse. [ بخاری، التفسیر، باب {من کان عدوا لجبریل } : ۴۴۸۰ ]
➋ Allah gave several answers to this excuse of the Jews. The first is: What fault does Jibreel (peace be upon him) have in this? He only revealed it to your heart by Allah's command; your enmity is then with Allah. The second is: If Jibreel had brought something against your book or something of misguidance and punishment, then indeed you would have enmity with him, but when the revelation he brings confirms your book and is guidance and glad tidings for the believers, then what right do you have to be hostile? The third is: Your claim that you are friends with Mika'il—how can this be correct when you are enemies with Jibreel? The friend of an enemy is also an enemy. Therefore, your enmity is not only with Jibreel, but with Allah, His angels, His messengers, and with Jibreel and Mika'il—all of them, because all of these are friends of Jibreel. And know that whoever is an enemy to all of them, then Allah is also an enemy to such disbelievers. Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: [ اِنَّ اللّٰہَ تَعَالٰی قَالَ مَنْ عَادَی لِيْ وَلِيًّا فَقَدْ آذَنْتُهٗ بِالْحَرْبِ ] [ بخاری، الرقاق، باب التواضع : ۶۵۰۲ ] "Allah said: Whoever shows enmity to a friend of Mine, I declare war against him."
➌ The people of the Ghurabiyyah sect say that Jibreel (peace be upon him) was bringing revelation for Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), but since the appearance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was similar, Jibreel revealed the revelation to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) instead of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). (Tuhfa Ithna Ashariyyah) In their enmity and disrespect toward Jibreel, this sect is also similar to the Jews.
