And when it is said to them (the Jews), "Believe in what Allâh has sent down," they say, "We believe in what was sent down to us." And they disbelieve in that which came after it, while it is the truth confirming what is with them. Say (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم to them): "Why then have you killed the Prophets of Allâh aforetime, if you indeed have been believers?"

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 91) In this verse, a pretext of the Jews for not believing in the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and its refutation has been mentioned. That is, when they were asked to believe in the Quran, they would say, "We believe in what has been revealed to us," meaning, "We accept the Torah and are only responsible for it; we do not accept anything else." In response, Allah Almighty said that firstly, your refusal to accept the Quran is meaningless, because it confirms the Torah, and as mentioned in the previous verse, you have already recognized that this is the very Messenger whose coming you were eagerly awaiting. Then, if your claim is that you only accept the Torah, why did you kill the previous prophets? Whereas all those prophets came to invite you towards the Torah, and in the Torah you were forbidden from killing the prophets. It is thus clear that your denial is merely due to jealousy, malice, and arrogance.
