سُوْرَةُ البَقَرَةِ
Surah Al-Baqara (2) — Ayah 9
يُخَـٰدِعُونَ ٱللَّهَ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَمَا يَخْدَعُونَ إِلَّآ أَنفُسَهُمْ وَمَا يَشْعُرُونَ ﴿9﴾

They (think to) deceive Allâh and those who believe, while they only deceive themselves, and perceive (it) not!

(Ayah 9) { ”يُخٰدِعُوْنَ“} is from the form "mufa‘alah," which implies mutual participation, so the translation "deception" has been used, meaning they conceal disbelief in their hearts and claim faith, and think that they are succeeding in deceiving Allah and the believers, whereas in reality, the deception is upon themselves: in this world, they are considered Muslims and enjoy the rights and benefits of Muslims, but in the Hereafter, they will be in the lowest depths of the Fire. Allah said: «{ اِنَّ الْمُنٰفِقِيْنَ يُخٰدِعُوْنَ اللّٰهَ وَ هُوَ خَادِعُهُمْ }» [ النساء : ۱۴۲ ] "Indeed, the hypocrites [think to] deceive Allah, but He is deceiving them." And they are not even aware of this (self-delusion).
