Surah Al-Baqara (2) — Ayah 261

مَّثَلُ ٱلَّذِينَ يُنفِقُونَ أَمْوَٰلَهُمْ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ كَمَثَلِ حَبَّةٍ أَنۢبَتَتْ سَبْعَ سَنَابِلَ فِى كُلِّ سُنۢبُلَةٍ مِّا۟ئَةُ حَبَّةٍ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ يُضَـٰعِفُ لِمَن يَشَآءُ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ وَٰسِعٌ عَلِيمٌ ﴿261﴾
The likeness of those who spend their wealth in the Way of Allâh, is as the likeness of a grain (of corn); it grows seven ears, and each ear has a hundred grains. Allâh gives manifold increase to whom He wills. And Allâh is All-Sufficient for His creatures’ needs, All-Knower.
مَّثَلُ mathalu Example
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna (of) those who
يُنفِقُونَ yunfiqūna spend
أَمْوَٰلَهُمْ amwālahum their wealth
فِى in
سَبِيلِ sabīli (the) way
ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah
كَمَثَلِ kamathali (is) like
حَبَّةٍ ḥabbatin a grain
أَنۢبَتَتْ anbatat which grows
سَبْعَ sabʿa seven
سَنَابِلَ sanābila ears
فِى in
كُلِّ kulli each
سُنۢبُلَةٍۢ sunbulatin ear
مِّا۟ئَةُ mi-atu hundred
حَبَّةٍۢ ۗ ḥabbatin grain(s)
وَٱللَّهُ wal-lahu And Allah
يُضَـٰعِفُ yuḍāʿifu gives manifold
لِمَن liman to whom
يَشَآءُ ۗ yashāu He wills
وَٱللَّهُ wal-lahu And Allah
وَٰسِعٌ wāsiʿun (is) All-Encompassing
عَلِيمٌ ʿalīmun All-Knowing

(Ayah 261){فِيْ سَبِيْلِ اللّٰهِ:} In the Noble Qur’an, the word {”سَبِيْلِ اللّٰهِ“ } has appeared in the general sense, meaning Islam, as He said: «اِنَّ كَثِيْرًا مِّنَ الْاَحْبَارِ وَ الرُّهْبَانِ لَيَاْكُلُوْنَ اَمْوَالَ النَّاسِ بِالْبَاطِلِ وَ يَصُدُّوْنَ عَنْ سَبِيْلِ اللّٰهِ » [التوبۃ: ۳۴ ] “Indeed, many of the scholars and monks certainly consume the wealth of people unjustly and hinder [them] from the way of Allah.” In this case, spending in any act of Islam is spending in the way of Allah, and it has also come in a specific sense, as in Surah At-Tawbah (60), where among the places to spend charity, one is { ”فِيْ سَبِيْلِ اللّٰهِ“ }. There, by { ”فِيْ سَبِيْلِ اللّٰهِ“ }, specific jihad is meant, and in Sahih Bukhari, Hajj is also included in this. Here, although the general meaning can also be intended, but as Shah Abdul Qadir (may Allah have mercy on him) said, taking jihad as the meaning is more appropriate in view of the preceding and following verses.
