O you who believe! Spend of that with which We have provided for you, before a Day comes when there will be no bargaining, nor friendship, nor intercession. And it is the disbelievers who are the Zâlimûn (wrong-doers).

(Ayah 254) ➊ The most difficult sacrifice for a person is that of life and wealth, and generally, the commands of Shariah are related to these two. In this surah, first, by saying «وَقَاتِلُوْافِيْسَبِيْلِاللّٰهِ »[ البقرۃ : ۲۴۴ ], the command of jihad was given, and from the verse: «مَنْذَاالَّذِيْيُقْرِضُاللّٰهَ … »[البقرۃ : ۲۴۵ ], encouragement was given to spend wealth for jihad. After that, with the story of Talut, the first command was emphasized, and with this verse, to emphasize the second command, the order to spend wealth was given again. (Razi) ➋ The purpose is that a person will leave behind all worldly means and resources and will appear alone before Allah Almighty. Therefore, for salvation in the Hereafter, make charity, almsgiving, and such good deeds a means. On the Day of Resurrection, worldly friendships, relationships, and intercession, etc., will be of no benefit. (Ibn Kathir) ➌ It is also understood from this verse that one who denies zakat is a disbeliever; thus, after the death of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) fought against the deniers of zakat, just as is done with disbelievers.
