وَبَشِّرِ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ أَنَّ لَهُمْ جَنَّـٰتٍ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ ۖ كُلَّمَا رُزِقُوا۟ مِنْهَا مِن ثَمَرَةٍ رِّزْقًا ۙ قَالُوا۟ هَـٰذَا ٱلَّذِى رُزِقْنَا مِن قَبْلُ ۖ وَأُتُوا۟ بِهِۦ مُتَشَـٰبِهًا ۖ وَلَهُمْ فِيهَآ أَزْوَٰجٌ مُّطَهَّرَةٌ ۖ وَهُمْ فِيهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ ﴿25﴾
And give glad tidings to those who believe and do righteous good deeds, that for them will be Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise). Every time they will be provided with a fruit therefrom, they will say: "This is what we were provided with before," and they will be given things in resemblance (i.e. in the same form but different in taste) and they shall have therein Azwâjun Mutahharatun [1] (purified mates or wives) and they will abide therein forever.
وَبَشِّرِ wabashiri And give good news
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna (to) those who
ءَامَنُوا۟ āmanū believe
وَعَمِلُوا۟ waʿamilū and do
ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ l-ṣāliḥāti [the] righteous deeds
أَنَّ anna that
لَهُمْ lahum for them
جَنَّـٰتٍۢ jannātin (will be) Gardens
تَجْرِى tajrī flow
مِن min [from]
تَحْتِهَا taḥtihā under them
ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ ۖ l-anhāru the rivers
كُلَّمَا kullamā Every time
رُزِقُوا۟ ruziqū they are provided
مِنْهَا min'hā therefrom
مِن min of
ثَمَرَةٍۢ thamaratin fruit
رِّزْقًۭا ۙ riz'qan (as) provision
قَالُوا۟ qālū they (will) say
هَـٰذَا hādhā This (is)
ٱلَّذِى alladhī the one which
رُزِقْنَا ruziq'nā we were provided
مِن min from
قَبْلُ ۖ qablu before
وَأُتُوا۟ wa-utū And they will be given
بِهِۦ bihi therefrom
مُتَشَـٰبِهًۭا ۖ mutashābihan (things) in resemblance
وَلَهُمْ walahum And for them
فِيهَآ fīhā therein
أَزْوَٰجٌۭ azwājun spouses
مُّطَهَّرَةٌۭ ۖ muṭahharatun purified
وَهُمْ wahum and they
فِيهَا fīhā therein
خَـٰلِدُونَ khālidūna (will) abide forever

(Ayah 25) ➊ After warning the disbelievers about the Fire, now the glad tidings of Paradise are being given upon having faith. In the Noble Qur’an, generally these two things go hand in hand. Ibn Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) said: { « كِتٰبًا مُّتَشَابِهًا مَّثَانِيَ » } According to the most authentic opinion in [ الزمر : ۲۳ ], by {”مَثَانِيَ“} it is meant that the counterpart of something is also mentioned, for example, disbelief with faith, Hell with Paradise.
➋ Faith is the name of affirmation by the heart, declaration by the tongue, and action in accordance with it. Here, the conjunction of righteous deeds with faith does not mean that these are two separate things, rather, after mentioning faith, righteous deeds are specifically mentioned because generally there is negligence in this regard, whereas faith devoid of action is not sufficient. If, due to the conjunction, both are considered separate, then in Surah Al-‘Asr, the four things mentioned in the verse: { « اِلَّا الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا وَ عَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ وَ تَوَاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ وَ تَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ » } would also have to be considered separate from each other. ➌ The first condition of righteous deeds is that they are purely for Allah Almighty. See the last verse of Surah Al-Kahf and verse (5) of Surah Al-Bayyinah. The second is that it should be according to the way shown by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: [ مَنْ عَمِلَ عَمَلاً لَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ أَمْرُنَا فَهُوَ رَدٌّ ] “Whoever does an action that is not in accordance with our command, it is rejected.” [ مسلم، الأقضیۃ، باب نقض الأحکام … : ۱۸؍ ۱۷۱۸ ]
➍ The basic things for a human’s pleasure and comfort are residence, food and drink, and marriage. For the residence of those who have faith and do righteous deeds, there is { « جَنّٰتٍ تَجْرِيْ مِنْ تَحْتِهَا الْاَنْهٰرُ » }, for food and drink there is { «كُلَّمَا رُزِقُوْا مِنْهَا مِنْ ثَمَرَةٍ رِّزْقًا» }, and for marriage there is { « اَزْوَاجٌ مُّطَهَّرَةٌ» }, then along with attaining these blessings, if there is fear of their loss, the pleasure becomes tainted. Allah Almighty removed this fear by saying: { «هُمْ فِيْهَا خٰلِدُوْنَ » } [ اللباب ] For details of the rivers of Paradise, see Surah Muhammad (15).
{مُطَهَّرَةٌ:} is a passive participle from the form “taf‘il.” Due to the addition of one letter, it has been translated as “extremely pure,” meaning they will be free from all kinds of outward impurities, such as urine, feces, saliva, menstruation, etc., and inward impurities such as lying, jealousy, malice, etc.
{ مُتَشَابِهًا:} means they will be similar in appearance to the fruits of the world, or similar to each other, but this similarity will only be in name or form, otherwise the blessings of Paradise have no comparison to the blessings of the world. See Surah As-Sajdah (17).
