Surah Al-Baqara (2) — Ayah 224

وَلَا تَجْعَلُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ عُرْضَةً لِّأَيْمَـٰنِكُمْ أَن تَبَرُّوا۟ وَتَتَّقُوا۟ وَتُصْلِحُوا۟ بَيْنَ ٱلنَّاسِ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ ﴿224﴾
And make not Allâh’s (Name) an excuse in your oaths against your doing good and acting piously, and making peace among mankind. And Allâh is All-Hearer, All-Knower (i.e. do not swear much and if you have sworn against doing something good then give an expiation for the oath and do good).
وَلَا walā And (do) not
تَجْعَلُوا۟ tajʿalū make
ٱللَّهَ l-laha Allah's (name)
عُرْضَةًۭ ʿur'ḍatan an excuse
لِّأَيْمَـٰنِكُمْ li-aymānikum in your oaths
أَن an that
تَبَرُّوا۟ tabarrū you do good
وَتَتَّقُوا۟ watattaqū and be righteous
وَتُصْلِحُوا۟ watuṣ'liḥū and make peace
بَيْنَ bayna between
ٱلنَّاسِ ۗ l-nāsi [the] people
وَٱللَّهُ wal-lahu And Allah
سَمِيعٌ samīʿun (is) All-Hearing
عَلِيمٌۭ ʿalīmun All-Knowing

(Ayah 224) Some people, in a fit of anger, swear an oath to not do a good deed, and then use this oath as a pretext to refrain from righteousness. In this verse, such people are being guided that you should not swear by Allah’s name in order to find an excuse to avoid good deeds like righteousness, piety, and making peace among people, because persisting in a wrong oath is a sin. See Surah An-Nur (22).

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Abdur Rahman bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him): “When you swear an oath about something, then see that another action is better than it, then offer expiation for your oath and do what is better.” [ بخاری، الأیمان والنذور، باب قول اللہ تعالٰی : «لا یؤاخذکم اللہ …» : ۶۶۲۲ ] For the expiation of oaths, see Surah Al-Ma’idah (89).
