Surah Al-Baqara (2) — Ayah 218

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَٱلَّذِينَ هَاجَرُوا۟ وَجَـٰهَدُوا۟ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ يَرْجُونَ رَحْمَتَ ٱللَّهِ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ ﴿218﴾
Verily, those who have believed, and those who have emigrated (for Allâh’s Religion) and have striven hard in the Way of Allâh, all these hope for Allâh’s Mercy. And Allâh is Oft-Forgiving, Most-Merciful.
إِنَّ inna Indeed
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who
ءَامَنُوا۟ āmanū believed
وَٱلَّذِينَ wa-alladhīna and those who
هَاجَرُوا۟ hājarū emigrated
وَجَـٰهَدُوا۟ wajāhadū and strove
فِى in
سَبِيلِ sabīli (the) way
ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ulāika those
يَرْجُونَ yarjūna they hope
رَحْمَتَ raḥmata (for) Mercy
ٱللَّهِ ۚ l-lahi (of) Allah
وَٱللَّهُ wal-lahu And Allah
غَفُورٌۭ ghafūrun (is) Oft-Forgiving
رَّحِيمٌۭ raḥīmun Most Merciful

(Ayah218) ➊ The meaning of {هَاجَرُوْا : } {’’هَجَرَ يَهْجُرُ(ن) ‘‘} is to separate from someone with the heart, tongue, or body, and {”هَاجَرُوْا“} is from this in the form of bab mufa‘alah, in which emphasis is intended, meaning "to cut off relations and become separate." The intended meaning is to leave the land of disbelief and come to the land of Islam. (Mufradat)

➋ The meaning of {جٰهَدُوْا :} {’’جَهَدَ يَجْهَدُ (ف)‘‘} is "to strive in some work." The meaning of {”جَاهَدَ مُجَاهَدَةً وَجِهَادًا“} is "to fight the enemy." (Al-Qamus) Due to the form of bab mufa‘alah from {’’جَهَدَ‘‘}, its meaning is to exert all one's effort. Therefore, the lexicographers have defined it as "to fight," because the utmost effort is this.

{يَرْجُوْنَ رَحْمَتَ اللّٰهِ:} means that faith, migration, and striving are such deeds as result in hope for Allah's mercy arising in the heart. Those whose hands are empty of these, no matter how much they claim to hope for Allah's mercy, in reality, hope for mercy does not arise in their hearts:

Whenever I prostrated, a voice came from the earth:
Your heart is familiar with idols, what will you gain from prayer?

In this, there is glad tidings for those fighters whose mention came in the context of attacking during the sacred months.
