The Cow · Medinan · Juz 1 · Page 17

Many of the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) wish that if they could turn you away as disbelievers after you have believed, out of envy from their ownselves, even after the truth (that Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم is Allâh’s Messenger) has become manifest unto them. But forgive and overlook, till Allâh brings His Command. Verily, Allâh is Able to do all things.

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 109) ➊ { كَثِيْرٌ مِّنْ اَهْلِ الْكِتٰبِ......:} This includes the People of the Book from the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) as well as all the Jews and Christians of later times, just as in our era, propaganda is being carried out against the beliefs and rulings of Islam in the name of knowledge and research by them, and their utmost effort is that if Muslims do not become Jews or Christians, then at least they should become disillusioned with their own religion.
{ حَسَدًا مِّنْ عِنْدِ اَنْفُسِهِمْ......: } Despite recognizing the truth, this desire of theirs is merely due to jealousy, and this jealousy is not because of any religious motivation, but because of the malice and enmity in their hearts. This shows the evil of jealousy: they themselves are deprived of faith and cannot even tolerate seeing this blessing with others. The refusal of Iblis to prostrate, Qabil killing his brother, the brothers of Yusuf oppressing their brother, and the People of the Book denying and being hostile to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) despite recognizing him—all were caused by this jealousy.
{فَاعْفُوْا وَ اصْفَحُوْا:} That is, until Allah commands you to fight them, act with forgiveness and forbearance, and do not lose control because of their petty attacks and jealousy and malice. Then, when the command for fighting came, Banu Nadir and Banu Qaynuqa were exiled, and Banu Qurayza were killed.
