Surah Maryam (19) — Ayah 50

وَوَهَبْنَا لَهُم مِّن رَّحْمَتِنَا وَجَعَلْنَا لَهُمْ لِسَانَ صِدْقٍ عَلِيًّا ﴿50﴾
And We gave them of Our Mercy (a good provision in plenty), and We granted them honour on the tongues (of all the nations, i.e. everybody remembers them with a good praise).
وَوَهَبْنَا wawahabnā And We bestowed
لَهُم lahum to them
مِّن min of
رَّحْمَتِنَا raḥmatinā Our Mercy
وَجَعَلْنَا wajaʿalnā and We made
لَهُمْ lahum for them
لِسَانَ lisāna a truthful mention
صِدْقٍ ṣid'qin a truthful mention
عَلِيًّۭا ʿaliyyan high

(Ayah 50) ➊ { وَ وَهَبْنَا لَهُمْ مِّنْ رَّحْمَتِنَا : ’’ مِنْ ‘‘} is for partition, therefore it is translated as "a portion." This mercy refers to prophethood and countless religious and worldly blessings, such as abundance of wealth and children, succession to the Holy Land, prophethood and leadership generation after generation, etc.

{ وَ جَعَلْنَا لَهُمْ لِسَانَ صِدْقٍ عَلِيًّا :} Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) interpreted this as {’’ثَنَاءٌ حَسَنٌ‘‘} (good reputation). [ طبری بسند ثابت ] By saying {’’ لِسَانَ ‘‘}, it refers to something associated with the tongue, i.e., fame and renown, just as by saying {’’يَدٌ‘‘ }, they mean kindness, because that is associated with the hand. {’’ لِسَانَ صِدْقٍ ‘‘} True renown means that they were truly deserving of that fame and reputation, and their actions validated that reputation, so their mention of goodness was made to remain forever on people's tongues. Thus, Jews, Christians, and Muslims all honor them, and the Durood Ibrahimi in prayer is also a result of the acceptance of Ibrahim's (peace be upon him) supplication. See Surah Ash-Shu'ara (84).
