Surah Maryam (19) — Ayah 35

مَا كَانَ لِلَّهِ أَن يَتَّخِذَ مِن وَلَدٍ ۖ سُبْحَـٰنَهُۥٓ ۚ إِذَا قَضَىٰٓ أَمْرًا فَإِنَّمَا يَقُولُ لَهُۥ كُن فَيَكُونُ ﴿35﴾
It befits not (the Majesty of) Allâh that He should beget a son [this refers to the slander of Christians against Allâh, by saying that ‘Îsâ (Jesus) is the son of Allâh]. Glorified (and Exalted) be He (above all that they associate with Him). When He decrees a thing, He only says to it: "Be!" - and it is.

(Ayah 35) ➊ { مَا كَانَ لِلّٰهِ اَنْ يَّتَّخِذَ مِنْ وَّلَدٍ … : ’’ كَانَ ‘‘} is for continuity, meaning it was never befitting for Allah before, nor is it now, that He should take any offspring. Because {’’ وَلَدٍ ‘‘} is indefinite, the translation is "any offspring," but due to the presence of {’’ مِنْ ‘‘} before it, the meaning becomes more general and emphatic, so it is translated as "that He should take any offspring whatsoever"—whether a boy or a girl, an angel or a jinn, a human or any other creature.

{ يَقُوْلُ لَهٗ كُنْ فَيَكُوْنُ :} means: Whoever has the power that by the word {’’ كُنْ ‘‘} can bring everything into existence, what need does He have for a son? The need for a son is for one who, due to old age and weakness, is dependent, or is mortal and needs an heir. See also the last verse of Surah Bani Isra'il. Then, when He can create Adam by saying {’’كُنْ‘‘}, He can also create 'Isa (peace be upon him) like Adam (peace be upon him) by saying {’’ كُنْ ‘‘}; see Surah Al 'Imran (59, 60).
