Surah Maryam (19) — Ayah 31

وَجَعَلَنِى مُبَارَكًا أَيْنَ مَا كُنتُ وَأَوْصَـٰنِى بِٱلصَّلَوٰةِ وَٱلزَّكَوٰةِ مَا دُمْتُ حَيًّا ﴿31﴾
"And He has made me blessed wheresoever I be, and has enjoined on me Salât (prayer), and Zakât, as long as I live."
وَجَعَلَنِى wajaʿalanī And He (has) made me
مُبَارَكًا mubārakan blessed
أَيْنَ ayna wherever
مَا wherever
كُنتُ kuntu I am
وَأَوْصَـٰنِى wa-awṣānī and has enjoined (on) me
بِٱلصَّلَوٰةِ bil-ṣalati [of] the prayer
وَٱلزَّكَوٰةِ wal-zakati and zakah
مَا as long as I am
دُمْتُ dum'tu as long as I am
حَيًّۭا ḥayyan alive

(Ayah 31) ➊ {وَ جَعَلَنِيْ مُبٰرَكًا اَيْنَ مَا كُنْتُ : ’’ مُبٰرَكًا ‘‘} Here, the form "Mufa‘alah" is not for opposition but for emphasis, meaning "very blessed." The meaning of "barakah" is abundant good, which is from {’’ بِرْكَةٌ ‘‘}, meaning a pond that contains a lot of water, that is, Allah Almighty has made me a source of much good, blessing, and benefit for people.

{ وَ اَوْصٰنِيْ بِالصَّلٰوةِ وَ الزَّكٰوةِ :} For the special emphasis on prayer and zakah, see Surah At-Tawbah (5, 11). From this verse, it is understood that prayer, zakah, and other rulings of the Shariah are not excused for anyone until death. Even our Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was commanded to worship until he passed away, as it is said: «{ وَ اعْبُدْ رَبَّكَ حَتّٰى يَاْتِيَكَ الْيَقِيْنُ [ الحجر : ۹۹ ] "And worship your Lord until certainty (death) comes to you." When Musa (peace be upon him) was granted prophethood, after the emphasis on monotheism, he was commanded to pray. See Surah Ta-Ha (14). Ibrahim (peace be upon him) prayed to Allah Almighty for himself and his offspring to remain steadfast in prayer. See Surah Ibrahim (40). When even the resolute messengers were not excused from prayer under any circumstance, how could some Sufis be excused? And when only the prayer of the heart was not sufficient for the prophets, how could it be sufficient for them? In reality, these people are the true depiction of verse (59) of this Surah Maryam.

➌ Since it was already in Allah Almighty’s knowledge that some people would make Isa (peace be upon him) into a deity, he was commanded to pray and give zakah throughout his life, so that everyone would know that one who himself prays before God can never be a deity. (Biqā‘ī)
