قَالَ لَهُۥ صَاحِبُهُۥ وَهُوَ يُحَاوِرُهُۥٓ أَكَفَرْتَ بِٱلَّذِى خَلَقَكَ مِن تُرَابٍ ثُمَّ مِن نُّطْفَةٍ ثُمَّ سَوَّىٰكَ رَجُلًا ﴿37﴾
His companion said to him during the talk with him: "Do you disbelieve in Him Who created you out of dust (i.e. your father Adam), then out of Nutfah (mixed semen drops of male and female discharge), then fashioned you into a man?
قَالَ qāla Said
لَهُۥ lahu to him
صَاحِبُهُۥ ṣāḥibuhu his companion
وَهُوَ wahuwa while he
يُحَاوِرُهُۥٓ yuḥāwiruhu was talking to him
أَكَفَرْتَ akafarta Do you disbelieve
بِٱلَّذِى bi-alladhī in One Who
خَلَقَكَ khalaqaka created you
مِن min from
تُرَابٍۢ turābin dust
ثُمَّ thumma then
مِن min from
نُّطْفَةٍۢ nuṭ'fatin a minute quantity of semen
ثُمَّ thumma then
سَوَّىٰكَ sawwāka fashioned you
رَجُلًۭا rajulan (into) a man

(Ayah 37){قَالَ لَهٗ صَاحِبُهٗ وَ هُوَ يُحَاوِرُهٗۤ …: ’’ تُرَابٍ ‘‘} And the tanween of {’’ نُطْفَةٍ ‘‘} is for belittlement. His believing companion, whom he was taunting with poverty while boasting about his wealth and status, conversed with him and, in response, reproached him for disbelief and said: Did you disbelieve in the One who created you from insignificant dust, then from a drop, then fashioned you into a complete man? See Hajj (5), Baqarah (28), and Mu’minun (12 to 14). In Tafsir Wahidi it is stated: “Alas, most wealthy Muslims are also afflicted with this arrogance, looking down upon the poor, and even upon scholars and the righteous.”
