Surah Al-Israa (17) — Ayah 100

قُل لَّوْ أَنتُمْ تَمْلِكُونَ خَزَآئِنَ رَحْمَةِ رَبِّىٓ إِذًا لَّأَمْسَكْتُمْ خَشْيَةَ ٱلْإِنفَاقِ ۚ وَكَانَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ قَتُورًا ﴿100﴾
Say (to the disbelievers): "If you possessed the treasure of the Mercy of my Lord (wealth, money, provision.), then you would surely hold back (from spending) for fear of (being exhausted), and man is ever miserly!"
قُل qul Say
لَّوْ law If
أَنتُمْ antum you
تَمْلِكُونَ tamlikūna possess
خَزَآئِنَ khazāina the treasures
رَحْمَةِ raḥmati (of) the Mercy
رَبِّىٓ rabbī (of) my Lord
إِذًۭا idhan then
لَّأَمْسَكْتُمْ la-amsaktum surely you would withhold
خَشْيَةَ khashyata (out of) fear
ٱلْإِنفَاقِ ۚ l-infāqi (of) spending
وَكَانَ wakāna And is
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ l-insānu man
قَتُورًۭا qatūran stingy

(Ayah 100) ➊ { قُلْ لَّوْ اَنْتُمْ تَمْلِكُوْنَ … :} That is, if you were the owners of the treasures of my Lord’s mercy, which can never be exhausted, even then you would not give anyone a single penny. The result of this extreme miserliness is that you cannot tolerate Allah granting blessings to anyone, nor can you tolerate that Allah has honored Muhammad (peace be upon him) with prophethood, because you envy and are miserly regarding the prophethood and messengership of Muhammad (peace be upon him). Both of these traits are extremely reprehensible. For similar verses, see Surah An-Nisa (53 to 55). In Ruh al-Ma’ani, it is mentioned that there are various opinions regarding the connection with the previous verses, but they are forced interpretations.

{ وَ كَانَ الْاِنْسَانُ قَتُوْرًا:’’ قَتَرَ يَقْتُرُ قَتْرًا وَ قُتُوْرًا‘‘} (n, d) To be tight-fisted in spending, extreme miserliness, to the extent that one is even miserly in spending on oneself. In this, the natural and inherent trait of man has been described, which has always existed in him, and from which deliverance can only be achieved through those deeds that have been mentioned as a remedy for the “impatient man” in Surah Al-Ma’arij, verses (19 to 35).
