Surah An-Nahl (16) — Ayah 87

وَأَلْقَوْا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ يَوْمَئِذٍ ٱلسَّلَمَ ۖ وَضَلَّ عَنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَفْتَرُونَ ﴿87﴾
And they will offer (their full) submission to Allâh (Alone) on that Day, and their invented false deities [all that they used to invoke besides Allâh, e.g. idols, saints, priests, monks, angels, jinn, Jibrîl (Gabriel), Messengers] will vanish from them.
وَأَلْقَوْا۟ wa-alqaw And they (will) offer
إِلَى ilā to

يَوْمَئِذٍ yawma-idhin (on) that Day
ٱلسَّلَمَ ۖ l-salama the submission
وَضَلَّ waḍalla and (is) lost

The meaning of (Ayah 87){ وَ اَلْقَوْا اِلَى اللّٰهِ يَوْمَىِٕذِ ا۟لسَّلَمَ … : ’’ السَّلَمَ ‘‘} is to be obedient, to be submissive. That is, at first, they will keep denying their polytheism by swearing oaths, as mentioned in Surah Al-An'am (22, 23) and Surah Al-Mujadila (18). Then, upon seeing the partners they had invented, they will try to implicate them as well, as mentioned in the previous verse. When those partners will also clearly call them liars and they will have no answer left, they will raise their hands before Allah Almighty and become completely obedient and utterly humble and submissive. All those fulfillers of needs, problem-solvers, benefactors, and supporters whom they had made up, and the false stories of their help that they had fabricated, all will vanish from them; none will be seen. Some people find an objection here that, like at this place, in many verses of the Quran, the speech, excuses, and oaths of the polytheists are mentioned, while in several verses, it is mentioned that their mouths will be sealed or they will not be allowed to speak. The interpreter of the Quran, Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), has reconciled this by saying that these are descriptions of different occasions, because the Day of Judgment will be fifty thousand years long; sometimes their state will be one way, sometimes another.
