Surah An-Nahl (16) — Ayah 62

وَيَجْعَلُونَ لِلَّهِ مَا يَكْرَهُونَ وَتَصِفُ أَلْسِنَتُهُمُ ٱلْكَذِبَ أَنَّ لَهُمُ ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ ۖ لَا جَرَمَ أَنَّ لَهُمُ ٱلنَّارَ وَأَنَّهُم مُّفْرَطُونَ ﴿62﴾
They assign to Allâh that which they dislike (for themselves), and their tongues assert the falsehood that the better things will be theirs. No doubt for them is the Fire, and they will be the first to be hastened on into it, and left there neglected. (Tafsir Al-Qurtubî)
وَيَجْعَلُونَ wayajʿalūna And they assign
لِلَّهِ lillahi to Allah
مَا what
يَكْرَهُونَ yakrahūna they dislike
وَتَصِفُ wataṣifu and assert
أَلْسِنَتُهُمُ alsinatuhumu their tongues
ٱلْكَذِبَ l-kadhiba the lie
أَنَّ anna that
لَهُمُ lahumu for them
ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ ۖ l-ḥus'nā (is) the best

أَنَّ anna that
لَهُمُ lahumu for them
ٱلنَّارَ l-nāra (is) the Fire
وَأَنَّهُم wa-annahum and that they
مُّفْرَطُونَ muf'raṭūna (will) be abandoned

(Ayah62) ➊ {وَ يَجْعَلُوْنَ لِلّٰهِ مَا يَكْرَهُوْنَ :} For example, these polytheists do not like that anyone else should be a co-owner in their property, but they associate others with Allah’s ownership. (See: Ar-Rum: 28) They desire honor for their own messenger, but they mock the messengers who bring Allah’s message; they do not tolerate abuse for themselves, but they abuse Allah. For example, saying that Allah has children is an abuse for Him, and there are many wretches whom Allah has given everything, yet they openly abuse Allah. Then, they assign sons for themselves and daughters for Allah. In short, whatever they do not like from their slaves for themselves, being Allah’s slaves or rather His creation, they do all those indecencies with Him, yet He is patient and gives respite. {وَ تَصِفُ اَلْسِنَتُهُمُ الْكَذِبَ :} They say that we have found peace and prosperity in this world, so this proves that Allah is pleased with us; therefore, if the Hereafter really happens, we will get all this there as well. See Surah Maryam (77–80), Surah Ha-Mim As-Sajdah (50), and Surah Al-Kahf (36).
{ وَ اَنَّهُمْ مُّفْرَطُوْنَ:’’ مُفْرَطُوْنَ ‘‘} is a passive participle from the Bab If‘al. {’’فَرَطٌ‘‘ } is one who is sent ahead by a people before themselves, as the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: [ أَنَا فَرَطُكُمْ عَلَی الْحَوْضِ ] [ بخاری، الرقاق، باب في الحوض : ۶۵۷۵، عن ابن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہ ] “I will go ahead of you at the Hawd (Pond) to arrange your necessities.” That is, there is no doubt that the Fire is for them, and these polytheists will be sent there before other sinners. One meaning of {’’ مُفْرَطُوْنَ ‘‘} is also that after being thrown into Hell, they will be left there and completely forgotten; they will rot there, as He said: «{ وَ قِيْلَ الْيَوْمَ نَنْسٰىكُمْ كَمَا نَسِيْتُمْ لِقَآءَ يَوْمِكُمْ هٰذَا [ الجاثیۃ : ۳۴ ] “And it will be said: Today We forget you as you forgot the meeting of this Day of yours.” The Arabs say: {’’ مَا أَفْرَطْتُ وَرَائِيْ أَحَدًا‘‘} “I have left no one behind me.” The commentators have mentioned both meanings, and both can occur at the same time.
