Surah An-Nahl (16) — Ayah 34
فَأَصَابَهُمْ سَيِّـَٔاتُ مَا عَمِلُوا۟ وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ ﴿34﴾

Then, the evil results of their deeds overtook them, and that at which they used to mock at surrounded them.

(Ayah34) ➊ The mudaf of {فَاَصَابَهُمْ سَيِّاٰتُ …: ’’ سَيِّاٰتُ ‘‘ } is omitted, that is, {’’ عَوَاقِبُ ‘‘}, therefore {’’ سَيِّاٰتُ مَا عَمِلُوْا ‘‘} has been translated as "the evil consequences of what they did."
➋ {وَ حَاقَ بِهِمْ: ’’حَاقَ يَحِيْقُ حَيْقًا‘‘} is on the pattern of {’’ بَاعَ يَبِيْعُ بَيْعًا ‘‘} meaning "encompassed," "surrounded." Its usage is only for an evil surrounding. «{ مَا كَانُوْا بِهٖ يَسْتَهْزِءُوْنَ }» "That thing which they used to mock"—it is clear that they used to mock the messengership of the messengers, their being resurrected, the reckoning, and being seized by punishment, and they used to say, "Bring that punishment quickly which you threaten us with." Tell me, if demanding punishment from the enemy as soon as possible is not mocking that punishment, then what is it? In short! That very punishment and the difficult moment of being presented before Allah surrounded them from all sides, which they used to mock.
