سُوْرَةُ النَّحْلِ
Surah An-Nahl (16) — Ayah 107
ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمُ ٱسْتَحَبُّوا۟ ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا عَلَى ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ ﴿107﴾
Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali
That is because they loved and preferred the life of this world over that of the Hereafter. And Allâh guides not the people who disbelieve.

The reason for the great punishment is that they preferred the life of this world over the Hereafter, and due to choosing disbelief, they were also deprived of the enablement (taufiq) for guidance from Allah.
