Surah Al-Hijr (15) — Ayah 73
فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّيْحَةُ مُشْرِقِينَ ﴿73﴾

(Ayah73){ فَاَخَذَتْهُمُ الصَّيْحَةُ مُشْرِقِيْنَ:’’ اَشْرَقَتِ الشَّمْسُ‘‘} "The sun rose." Before this, in Ayah (66), the word {’’مُصْبِحِيْنَ ‘‘} is used, meaning at the time of morning. In Surah Qamar (38), the word {’’ بُكْرَةً ‘‘} is used, which means the first part of the day. Some scholars have said that the punishment began in the morning and continued until the sun had risen. One reconciliation could be that the entire time from the appearance of dawn until some time after sunrise is commonly referred to as morning, and another reconciliation is that {’’ أَشْرَقَ يُشْرِقُ‘‘} generally means the coming of light in darkness, which obviously begins with the morning and is completed with the rising of the sun, as it is said: «{ وَ اَشْرَقَتِ الْاَرْضُ بِنُوْرِ رَبِّهَا }» [ الزمر : ۶۹ ] "And the earth will shine with the light of its Lord." I have adopted this meaning in the translation, so that it remains consistent with {’’ مُصْبِحِيْنَ ‘‘}.
