الٓمٓر ۚ تِلْكَ ءَايَـٰتُ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ ۗ وَٱلَّذِىٓ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكَ مِن رَّبِّكَ ٱلْحَقُّ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ ﴿1﴾
Alif-Lâm-Mîm-Râ.
[These letters are one of the miracles of the Qur’an; and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings].These are the Verses of the Book (the Qur’an), and that which has been revealed unto you (Muhammad ﷺ) from your Lord is the truth, out most men believe not.
الٓمٓر ۚ alif-lam-meem-ra Alif Laam Mim Ra
تِلْكَ til'ka These
ءَايَـٰتُ āyātu (are) the Verses
ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ ۗ l-kitābi (of) the Book
وَٱلَّذِىٓ wa-alladhī And that which
أُنزِلَ unzila has been revealed
إِلَيْكَ ilayka to you
مِن min from
رَّبِّكَ rabbika your Lord
ٱلْحَقُّ l-ḥaqu (is) the truth
وَلَـٰكِنَّ walākinna but
أَكْثَرَ akthara most
ٱلنَّاسِ l-nāsi (of) the mankind
لَا (do) not
يُؤْمِنُونَ yu'minūna believe

(Ayah1) ➊ {الٓمّٓرٰ :} These are the disjointed letters; their details have already been mentioned at the beginning of Surah Al-Baqarah. Sha'rawi (may Allah have mercy on him) has mentioned a benefit here that the entire Noble Qur'an is based on connection, meaning every word is joined to the next, except at places where a pause is required, such as at the end of an ayah, etc. For example, take this surah: «{ تِلْكَ اٰيٰتُ الْكِتٰبِ in which every word will be recited with its vowel marks, but the disjointed letters { ’’ الٓمّٓرٰ ‘‘} will not be recited together; rather, all four letters will be recited separately, because Jibreel (peace be upon him) taught the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in this manner, then he recited it in this way, and it has reached us through continuous transmission in this very manner.
{ تِلْكَ اٰيٰتُ الْكِتٰبِ :} When a word is used in an absolute sense, it refers to a complete individual. For example, it is said: {’’فُلاَنٌ الرَّجُلُ‘‘} meaning such-and-such person is a man, i.e., he is truly a complete man, not stingy, cowardly, a liar, or crippled. Similarly, in religion and beliefs, {’’اَلْكِتَابُ‘‘} refers to the complete Book, the Noble Qur'an. In grammar, the book of Sibawayh is called {’’اَلْكِتَابُ‘‘}, and among cities, {’’مَدِيْنَةُ النَّبِيِّ صلي الله عليه وسلم ‘‘} is called {’’ اَلْمَدِيْنَةُ ‘‘}.
{ وَ لٰكِنَّ اَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لَا يُؤْمِنُوْنَ :} That is, whatever has been revealed to you is the very truth, but most people do not believe due to not reflecting. In this, there is a lesson for those who are followers of the opinion of the majority of mankind, and also praise for those who are blessed with faith; they may be few or many, but the majority are those who are deprived of the blessing of faith.
