Surah Yusuf (12) — Ayah 79

قَالَ مَعَاذَ ٱللَّهِ أَن نَّأْخُذَ إِلَّا مَن وَجَدْنَا مَتَـٰعَنَا عِندَهُۥٓ إِنَّآ إِذًا لَّظَـٰلِمُونَ ﴿79﴾
He said: "Allâh forbid, that we should take anyone but him with whom we found our property. Indeed (if we did so), we should be Zâlimûn (wrong-doers)."
قَالَ qāla He said
مَعَاذَ maʿādha Allah forbid
ٱللَّهِ l-lahi Allah forbid
أَن an that
نَّأْخُذَ nakhudha we take
إِلَّا illā except
مَن man (one) who
وَجَدْنَا wajadnā we found
مَتَـٰعَنَا matāʿanā our possession
عِندَهُۥٓ ʿindahu with him
إِنَّآ innā Indeed, we
إِذًۭا idhan then
لَّظَـٰلِمُونَ laẓālimūna surely (would be) wrongdoers

(Ayah79) {قَالَ مَعَاذَ اللّٰهِ … :} Yusuf (peace be upon him) wanted to keep his brother with him, but he did not want to call him a thief. Observe his utmost intelligence and utmost truthfulness: with words that encompassed both meanings, he refused to send his brother along. He said, "We seek refuge with Allah from seizing anyone except the one with whom we found our belongings; in that case, we would surely be unjust, and we cannot commit injustice."
