Surah Yusuf (12) — Ayah 68

وَلَمَّا دَخَلُوا۟ مِنْ حَيْثُ أَمَرَهُمْ أَبُوهُم مَّا كَانَ يُغْنِى عَنْهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ مِن شَىْءٍ إِلَّا حَاجَةً فِى نَفْسِ يَعْقُوبَ قَضَىٰهَا ۚ وَإِنَّهُۥ لَذُو عِلْمٍ لِّمَا عَلَّمْنَـٰهُ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ ﴿68﴾
And when they entered according to their father’s advice, it did not avail them in the least against (the Will of) Allâh; it was but a need of Ya‘qûb’s (Jacob) inner-self which he discharged. And verily, he was endowed with knowledge because We had taught him, but most men know not.
وَلَمَّا walammā And when
دَخَلُوا۟ dakhalū they entered
مِنْ min from
حَيْثُ ḥaythu where
أَمَرَهُمْ amarahum ordered them
أَبُوهُم abūhum their father
مَّا not
كَانَ kāna it
يُغْنِى yugh'nī avail(ed)
عَنْهُم ʿanhum them
مِّنَ mina against
ٱللَّهِ l-lahi Allah
مِن min any
شَىْءٍ shayin thing
إِلَّا illā but
حَاجَةًۭ ḥājatan (it was) a need
فِى of
نَفْسِ nafsi Yaqub's soul
يَعْقُوبَ yaʿqūba Yaqub's soul
قَضَىٰهَا ۚ qaḍāhā which he carried out
وَإِنَّهُۥ wa-innahu And indeed, he
لَذُو ladhū (was) a possessor
عِلْمٍۢ ʿil'min (of) knowledge
لِّمَا limā because
عَلَّمْنَـٰهُ ʿallamnāhu We had taught him
وَلَـٰكِنَّ walākinna but
أَكْثَرَ akthara most
ٱلنَّاسِ l-nāsi (of) the people
لَا (do) not
يَعْلَمُونَ yaʿlamūna know

(Ayah68) ➊ {وَ لَمَّا دَخَلُوْا … : ’’ حَاجَةً ‘‘} "Desire" because man is in need of it.
{ وَ لٰكِنَّ اَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُوْنَ:} That is, most people do not know the reality of this divine secret (predestination) and remain proud of their own planning, or they understand trusting in Allah to mean that no planning should be done at all, as is the case or claim of most Sufis. The meaning is that if Yaqub (peace be upon him) advised his sons by understanding the correct concept of planning and trust in Allah, then in reality, it was the result of the teaching We gave him, that is, through revelation. Shah Abdul Qadir (may Allah have mercy on him) writes: "Still, destiny came upon them, it was not averted, so those who have knowledge can have both certainty in destiny and precaution through means, and if an ignorant person has one, he cannot have the other."
