Surah Yusuf (12) — Ayah 102

ذَٰلِكَ مِنْ أَنۢبَآءِ ٱلْغَيْبِ نُوحِيهِ إِلَيْكَ ۖ وَمَا كُنتَ لَدَيْهِمْ إِذْ أَجْمَعُوٓا۟ أَمْرَهُمْ وَهُمْ يَمْكُرُونَ ﴿102﴾
That is of the news of the Ghaib (Unseen) which We reveal to you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه و سلم). You were not (present) with them when they arranged their plan together, and (while) they were plotting.
ذَٰلِكَ dhālika That
مِنْ min (is) from
أَنۢبَآءِ anbāi the news
ٱلْغَيْبِ l-ghaybi (of) the unseen
نُوحِيهِ nūḥīhi which We reveal
إِلَيْكَ ۖ ilayka to you
وَمَا wamā And not
كُنتَ kunta you were
لَدَيْهِمْ ladayhim with them
إِذْ idh when
أَجْمَعُوٓا۟ ajmaʿū they put together
أَمْرَهُمْ amrahum their plan
وَهُمْ wahum while they
يَمْكُرُونَ yamkurūna (were) plotting

(Ayah102) ➊ { ذٰلِكَ مِنْ اَنْۢبَآءِ الْغَيْبِ نُوْحِيْهِ اِلَيْكَ :} That is, these unseen reports with their authentic details We have informed you through revelation; without Our revelation, how could you have known them? The purpose of this was to warn the disbelievers of Makkah that Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah; if he were not a true Messenger, how could he have known these events from thousands of years ago and narrated them to you?

{ وَ مَا كُنْتَ لَدَيْهِمْ اِذْ اَجْمَعُوْۤا اَمْرَهُمْ … :} That is, if We had not informed you, you would have had no knowledge, because you were not present with them at that time. The Noble Qur’an has repeated this statement in several places with {’’ وَ مَا كُنْتَ ‘‘} and has reminded of its favor that you had no knowledge of past events, nor were you present when all this happened; it is We who have informed you of these events through revelation. Therefore, the people of Makkah and other disbelievers should never doubt your Prophethood. There is also a lesson in this for those Muslims who say that our Prophet (peace be upon him) already knew everything; if that were so, what was the need for revelation? All the verses of the Noble Qur’an with {’’ وَ مَا كُنْتَ ‘‘} negate his knowledge of the unseen. ➌ In this verse, there is also an indication that the story of Yusuf (peace be upon him) as transmitted by the People of the Book with its details is not all authentic, because if it were authentic, then none of its statements would contradict the Noble Qur’an, which is a guardian over their books and a protector of their authentic contents. See Surah Al-Ma’idah (48). Therefore, due to the mixing of truth and falsehood, their information cannot be relied upon.
