وَأُتْبِعُوا۟ فِى هَـٰذِهِ ٱلدُّنْيَا لَعْنَةً وَيَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۗ أَلَآ إِنَّ عَادًا كَفَرُوا۟ رَبَّهُمْ ۗ أَلَا بُعْدًا لِّعَادٍ قَوْمِ هُودٍ ﴿60﴾
And they were pursued by a curse in this world and (so they will be) on the Day of Resurrection. No doubt! Verily, ‘Âd disbelieved in their Lord. So away with ‘Âd, the people of Hûd.
وَأُتْبِعُوا۟ wa-ut'biʿū And they were followed
فِى in
هَـٰذِهِ hādhihi this
ٱلدُّنْيَا l-dun'yā world
لَعْنَةًۭ laʿnatan (with) a curse
وَيَوْمَ wayawma and (on the) Day
ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۗ l-qiyāmati (of) the Resurrection
أَلَآ alā No doubt

كَفَرُوا۟ kafarū disbelieved
رَبَّهُمْ ۗ rabbahum their Lord

(Ayah 60) ➊ { وَ اُتْبِعُوْا فِيْ هٰذِهِ الدُّنْيَا لَعْنَةً وَّ يَوْمَ الْقِيٰمَةِ:} The meaning of "curse" is to drive away in anger. By Allah’s curse is meant punishment in the Hereafter and deprivation from His mercy and guidance in this world, and by a human’s curse is meant supplicating this for someone. (Raghib) That is, every prophet and believer who comes into the world will continue to curse them because of their disbelief, and in the Hereafter, they will be disgraced and afflicted with punishment before everyone.

{اَلَاۤ اِنَّ عَادًا كَفَرُوْا رَبَّهُمْ … : ’’ اَلَاۤ ‘‘} was used as a warning so that no one would say that these poor people were wronged. It was said: Listen! These people committed the greatest crime of all crimes, disbelief in the Lord Almighty. Then it was repeated: Listen! For ‘Ad there is every kind of deprivation and distance from Allah’s mercy, who were the people of Hud (peace be upon him). Remember, after {’’ كَفَرَ‘‘} generally the letter "ba" comes, for example {’’ كَفَرُوْا بِرَبِّهِمْ ‘‘}, which means ungratefulness and denial of the Lord’s blessings. Without "ba", { ’’ كَفَرُوْا رَبَّهُمْ ‘‘} means that the people of ‘Ad denied their Lord altogether, just as atheists do not believe in the Lord Almighty. This is an even greater crime than {’’ كَفَرُوْا رَبَّهُمْ ‘‘ ’’ كَفَرُوْا بِرَبِّهِمْ ‘‘}. According to some commentators, in {’’ كَفَرُوْا رَبَّهُمْ ‘‘} it is also possible that in {’’ كَفَرُوْا بِرَبِّهِمْ‘‘ } the "ba" was omitted for lightness, and both have the same meaning.
