And when Our Commandment came, We saved Hûd and those who believed with him by a Mercy from Us, and We saved them from a severe torment.

(Ayah 58){وَلَمَّاجَآءَاَمْرُنَانَجَّيْنَاهُوْدًا …:} By Our command means the command of punishment; its details are present in Surah Al-Ahqaf, Surah Al-Haqqah, Surah Al-Qamar, and other Surahs. Allah Almighty sent upon them a violent, fierce, and rebellious wind, which blew upon them for seven nights and eight days continuously, and it did not leave a single soul among the disbelievers. See Surah Al-Haqqah (6 to 8). This was the punishment of this world; in the Hereafter, an even harsher punishment {’’ عَذَابٍغَلِيْظٍ ‘‘} is prepared for them. But Allah Almighty saved Hud (peace be upon him) and those who believed with him from both these punishments.
Here a question arises: when such a terrifying wind blows, it passes over both believers and disbelievers, so how were Hud (peace be upon him) and his companions saved? Similarly, from the scream (shriek) that came upon Thamud, the ears and hearts of the disbelievers burst, but nothing happened to Salih (peace be upon him) and the believers. Allah Almighty answered this by saying that We saved them with Our great mercy. In {’’ بِرَحْمَةٍ ‘‘}, the tanween is for magnification, so what can be said about the greatness of the mercy that is from Allah? That wind and scream came upon the disbelievers by Allah’s command; they were not commanded to affect the Muslims who were with them. That is why they were safe in the embrace of Allah Almighty’s great mercy. Abraha and his army became like eaten straw from the pebbles of birds in flocks, but nothing happened to the people of Makkah. In reality, this command was from the All-Powerful; if it had been from any worldly person, both disbelievers and believers would have perished. Mutanabbi has said:
“The sun blackens the whiteness of our faces, but it does not blacken the whiteness of the eye or the whiteness of hair. Whereas, if we go to any judge of this world, the condition of both would be the same in the decision.”
Healing after illness is also mercy, but not letting illness come at all is an even greater mercy.
