Surah Hud (11) — Ayah 42

وَهِىَ تَجْرِى بِهِمْ فِى مَوْجٍ كَٱلْجِبَالِ وَنَادَىٰ نُوحٌ ٱبْنَهُۥ وَكَانَ فِى مَعْزِلٍ يَـٰبُنَىَّ ٱرْكَب مَّعَنَا وَلَا تَكُن مَّعَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ ﴿42﴾
So it (the ship) sailed with them amidst waves like mountains, and Nûh (Noah) called out to his son, who had separated himself (apart): "O my son! Embark with us and be not with the disbelievers."
وَهِىَ wahiya And it
تَجْرِى tajrī sailed
بِهِمْ bihim with them
فِى on
مَوْجٍۢ mawjin the waves
كَٱلْجِبَالِ kal-jibāli like mountains
وَنَادَىٰ wanādā and Nuh called out
نُوحٌ nūḥun and Nuh called out
ٱبْنَهُۥ ib'nahu (to) his son
وَكَانَ wakāna and he was
فِى [in]
مَعْزِلٍۢ maʿzilin apart
يَـٰبُنَىَّ yābunayya O my son
ٱرْكَب ir'kab Embark
مَّعَنَا maʿanā with us
وَلَا walā and (do) not
تَكُن takun be
مَّعَ maʿa with
ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ l-kāfirīna the disbelievers

(Ayah 42) ➊ { وَ هِيَ تَجْرِيْ بِهِمْ فِيْ مَوْجٍ كَالْجِبَالِ :} The waves of the storm were like mountains, which shows the vastness of the water, its turbulence, and fury, as well as the strength and stability of the ark.
{ وَ نَادٰى نُوْحُ اِبْنَهٗ … :} See the compassion of the father, how lovingly he invites {’’يٰبُنَيَّ ‘‘} (O my little son! or O my dear son!) to board the ark.
{وَ لَا تَكُنْ مَّعَ الْكٰفِرِيْنَ :} From this, it is understood that the cause of this son's destruction was the company of disbelievers and staying with them. If he had stayed in the company of Nuh (peace be upon him), he would not have fallen into the hands of the disbelievers. Even at the time of such a great flood, he drowned, but he did not consider it acceptable to come to Nuh (peace be upon him). Shaykh Sa'di writes:
The son of Nuh sat with the wicked,
He lost the family of prophethood.
"When the son of Nuh (peace be upon him) sat with the wicked, he lost the family of prophethood (he was no longer counted among the family of prophethood)."
