Surah Hud (11) — Ayah 35

أَمْ يَقُولُونَ ٱفْتَرَىٰهُ ۖ قُلْ إِنِ ٱفْتَرَيْتُهُۥ فَعَلَىَّ إِجْرَامِى وَأَنَا۠ بَرِىٓءٌ مِّمَّا تُجْرِمُونَ ﴿35﴾
Or they (the pagans of Makkah) say: "He (Muhammad صلى الله عليه و سلم) has fabricated it (the Qur’ân)." Say: "If I have fabricated it, upon me be my crimes, but I am innocent of (all) those crimes which you commit."
أَمْ am Or

ٱفْتَرَىٰهُ ۖ if'tarāhu He has invented it
قُلْ qul Say
إِنِ ini If
ٱفْتَرَيْتُهُۥ if'taraytuhu I have invented it
فَعَلَىَّ faʿalayya then on me
إِجْرَامِى ij'rāmī (is) my crime
وَأَنَا۠ wa-anā but I am
بَرِىٓءٌۭ barīon innocent
مِّمَّا mimmā of what
تُجْرِمُونَ tuj'rimūna crimes you commit

(Ayah 35){ اَمْ يَقُوْلُوْنَ افْتَرٰىهُ قُلْ اِنِ افْتَرَيْتُهٗ …:} The commentators have given different explanations of this verse. Some have considered it to be related to the story of Noah (peace be upon him) and have regarded the address in it as being to Noah (peace be upon him), while others have considered it to be a parenthetical sentence within the story of Noah (peace be upon him) and, considering it to be the statement of the polytheists of Makkah, have regarded the address as being to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), meaning: Do (the disbelievers of Makkah) say that he (Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him) has fabricated this (Qur’an) from his own heart? (O Muhammad!) Say: If I have fabricated it from my own heart, then the burden of my sin will fall upon me, and I am free from the responsibility of the sins you commit. Among the scholars of exegesis, Razi and, in agreement with him, Shawkani have preferred the first opinion and have written that this is the view of most commentators. Hafiz Ibn Kathir and the author of Al-Kashshaf have considered the second explanation to be more correct; this is also the opinion of Shah Abdul Qadir (may Allah have mercy on him).
