Surah Hud (11) — Ayah 20

Hud · Meccan · Juz 12 · Page 224

By no means will they escape (from Allâh’s Torment) on earth, nor have they protectors besides Allâh! Their torment will be doubled! They could not bear to hear (the preachers of the truth) and they used not to see (the truth because of their severe aversion, in spite of the fact that they had the sense of hearing and sight).

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 20) ➊ { اُولٰٓىِٕكَ لَمْ يَكُوْنُوْا مُعْجِزِيْنَ …:} That is, these people can never escape Allah or evade His grasp. Whenever He wishes to seize them, He will seize them even on this earth, and as for the Hereafter, that goes without saying. Then, besides Allah, there will never be anyone to help them who could save them from Allah’s punishment and grasp.
{ يُضٰعَفُ لَهُمُ الْعَذَابُ :} One is the punishment for their own misguidance, and the other is the punishment for leading others astray and preventing them from the path of Allah. See Surah Al-A'raf (37, 38) and Al-Ankabut (12, 13).
{ مَا كَانُوْا يَسْتَطِيْعُوْنَ۠ السَّمْعَ وَ مَا كَانُوْا يُبْصِرُوْنَ :} That is, despite having ears and eyes, they neither listened to nor saw the truth. See Surah Al-A'raf (179). Another meaning is that they had so much enmity towards the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) that they could neither bear to listen to him nor tolerate seeing him.
