There is a difference of opinion among the commentators regarding whether this surah is Makki or Madani, but from the mention of those who pray to show off, it is clear that it is Madani, because in Makkah there was no need for anyone to pray for show. Above, with the name of the surah, according to the well-known opinion, Makki has been written.
(Ayah 1 to 3) {اَرَءَيْتَ الَّذِيْ يُكَذِّبُ بِالدِّيْنِ …: ’’دَعَّ يَدُعُّ دَعًّا‘‘} (n) To push away. "Have you seen the one who denies the recompense...?" This is addressed firstly to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and after that, every person is its addressee. In these verses, it is mentioned how, due to denying the recompense of deeds on the Day of Resurrection, a person develops hardness of heart and wretchedness. Since, for him, the world is everything, he neither expects any benefit from showing sympathy to an orphan or caring for the needy, nor does he fear any accountability or punishment for usurping their rights. Therefore, he is extremely merciless in dealing with these helpless people. If an orphan demands his father's inheritance or any other right, he pushes him out. As for showing mercy to the needy and feeding them himself, that is out of the question; he is not even willing to tell someone else to do so. Only the person who believes in reward and punishment can show sympathy to orphans and the needy.
