Whether We show you (in your lifetime, O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) some of what We promise them (the torment), or We cause you to die - still unto Us is their return, and moreover, Allâh is Witness over what they used to do.

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. (Ayah 46) ➊ {وَاِمَّانُرِيَنَّكَبَعْضَالَّذِيْنَعِدُهُمْ … :} means the dominance of Islam and the humiliation and disgrace of the opponents, that is, the promises of killing, captivity, and defeat that We continue to make to these disbelievers from time to time—if We fulfill some of them in your lifetime and show them to you, or if We take you away before fulfilling some of them, in both cases they have to return to Us. Then Allah is a perfect witness over what these people are doing. There He will show you their end. The meaning of {’’ شَاهِدٌ ‘‘} is witness, and in {’’ شَهِيْدٌ ‘‘} there is emphasis. ➋ Allah fulfilled some of these promises in your lifetime, for example, the imposition of famine, hunger, and fear upon the people of Makkah. See An-Nahl (112). Because of this famine, they were forced to eat even bones, and they saw smoke everywhere between the earth and the sky. See Ad-Dukhan (10, 11). Until at that time, the leader of the disbelievers, Abu Sufyan, came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and requested for rain in these words: [أَيْمُحَمَّدُإِنَّقَوْمَكَقَدْهَلَكُوْا،فَادْعُاللّٰهَأَنْيَّكْشِفَعَنْهُمْ،فَدَعَا ][ بخاری، التفسیر، باب « ثم تولوا …» : ۴۸۲۴ ] "O Muhammad! Surely your people have perished, so pray to Allah to remove (this calamity) from them." So you prayed. Then (the battles of) Badr, Uhud, Khandaq, Hudaybiyyah, and finally the conquest of Makkah and Khaybar, and the entire Arabian Peninsula embracing Islam in your lifetime. Allah showed you all this in your lifetime, and some promises were fulfilled after your passing in the time of the Caliphs. In any case, there remained no doubt about your truthfulness. It is stated in "Mawduh al-Qur'an": "Some of the dominance of Islam happened before you (the Prophet, peace be upon him), and the rest through your Caliphs." Perhaps in {’’اَوْنَتَوَفَّيَنَّكَ‘‘} there is an indication towards the second period.
