وَٱلَّذِينَ كَسَبُوا۟ ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ جَزَآءُ سَيِّئَةٍۭ بِمِثْلِهَا وَتَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ ۖ مَّا لَهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ مِنْ عَاصِمٍ ۖ كَأَنَّمَآ أُغْشِيَتْ وُجُوهُهُمْ قِطَعًا مِّنَ ٱلَّيْلِ مُظْلِمًا ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلنَّارِ ۖ هُمْ فِيهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ ﴿27﴾
And those who have earned evil deeds, the recompense of an evil deed is the like thereof, and humiliating disgrace will cover them (their faces). No defender will they have from Allâh. Their faces will be covered as it were with pieces from the darkness of night. They are the dwellers of the Fire, they will abide therein forever.
وَٱلَّذِينَ wa-alladhīna And those who
كَسَبُوا۟ kasabū earned
ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ l-sayiāti the evil deeds
جَزَآءُ jazāu (the) recompense
سَيِّئَةٍۭ sayyi-atin (of) an evil deed
بِمِثْلِهَا bimith'lihā (is) like it
وَتَرْهَقُهُمْ watarhaquhum and (will) cover them
ذِلَّةٌۭ ۖ dhillatun humiliation
مَّا They will not have
لَهُم lahum They will not have
مِّنَ mina from
ٱللَّهِ l-lahi Allah
مِنْ min any
عَاصِمٍۢ ۖ ʿāṣimin defender
كَأَنَّمَآ ka-annamā As if
أُغْشِيَتْ ugh'shiyat had been covered
وُجُوهُهُمْ wujūhuhum their faces
قِطَعًۭا qiṭaʿan (with) pieces
مِّنَ mina from
ٱلَّيْلِ al-layli the darkness (of) night
مُظْلِمًا ۚ muẓ'liman the darkness (of) night
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ulāika Those
أَصْحَـٰبُ aṣḥābu (are the) companions
ٱلنَّارِ ۖ l-nāri (of) the Fire
هُمْ hum they
فِيهَا fīhā in it
خَـٰلِدُونَ khālidūna (will) abide forever

(Ayah 27) ➊ {وَ الَّذِيْنَ كَسَبُوا السَّيِّاٰتِ … :} Above was the mention of the Muhsineen (those who do good), now the condition of those people is described who commit Sayyi’aat (evil deeds). In {’’ سَيِّئَةٍۭ ‘‘}, the tanween is for indefiniteness, therefore the translation is “any evil.” In the previous verse, it is mentioned that the reward for good is much better than it, meaning Paradise and additionally the vision of Allah, now it is stated that for any evil, its recompense will only be equal to it, not more or multiplied. They will be surrounded by a great humiliation, that is, in {’’ ذِلَّةٌ ‘‘} the tanween is for magnification and greatness.

{مَا لَهُمْ مِّنَ اللّٰهِ مِنْ عَاصِمٍ:} In reality, whether it is the world or the Hereafter, there is no savior anywhere except Allah, but man finds many supports in the world and thinks that through them he has achieved his goal, but in the Hereafter all such means will come to an end and everyone will be certain that now there is no one to save from Allah’s grasp and His punishment, as mentioned in Surah Qiyamah: «{ يَقُوْلُ الْاِنْسَانُ يَوْمَىِٕذٍ اَيْنَ الْمَفَرُّ (10) كَلَّا لَا وَزَرَ (11) اِلٰى رَبِّكَ يَوْمَىِٕذِ الْمُسْتَقَرُّ [القیامۃ : ۱۰ تا ۱۲ ] “And man will say that day, ‘Where is the place of escape?’ Never! There is no refuge. That day, the return is only to your Lord.”

{ كَاَنَّمَاۤ اُغْشِيَتْ وُجُوْهُهُمْ قِطَعًا مِّنَ الَّيْلِ مُظْلِمًا : ’’ غَشِيَ يَغْشٰي‘‘} (‘Ayn) To cover. {’’ اَغْشٰي يُغْشِيْ ‘‘} (af‘aal) To put something over someone that covers him. The excessive blackness of their faces is likened as if several pieces of the darkness of a dark night have been put together and thrown over their faces, which have covered them. The mention of the blackness of the faces of the criminals has been made by Allah at several places, for example, see Surah Aal-e-Imran (106, 107), Qiyamah (22 to 25), and Abasa (38 to 41) {’’ مُظْلِمًا ‘‘} This is the state of {’’ الَّيْلِ ‘‘}.
