قُلْ أَنفِقُوا۟ طَوْعًا أَوْ كَرْهًا لَّن يُتَقَبَّلَ مِنكُمْ ۖ إِنَّكُمْ كُنتُمْ قَوْمًا فَـٰسِقِينَ ﴿53﴾
Say: "Spend (in Allâh’s Cause) willingly or unwillingly, it will not be accepted from you. Verily, you are ever a people who are Fâsiqûn (rebellious, disobedient to Allâh)."
قُلْ qul Say
أَنفِقُوا۟ anfiqū Spend
طَوْعًا ṭawʿan willingly
أَوْ aw or
كَرْهًۭا karhan unwillingly
لَّن lan never
يُتَقَبَّلَ yutaqabbala will be accepted
مِنكُمْ ۖ minkum from you
إِنَّكُمْ innakum Indeed, you
كُنتُمْ kuntum [you] are
قَوْمًۭا qawman a people
فَـٰسِقِينَ fāsiqīna defiantly disobedient

53. 1. "انفقوا" is an imperative verb. But here it is in the sense of condition and consequence. That is, if you spend, it will not be accepted, or this imperative is in the sense of a statement. The meaning is that both things are equal, whether you spend or not. If you spend in the way of Allah by your own will, even then it is not accepted. Because faith is the first condition for acceptance, and that is missing in you, and wealth spent unwillingly is already rejected by Allah, because the correct intention, which is necessary for acceptance, is not present there. This verse is just like this one: (اِسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ اَوْ لَا تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ ۭاِنْ تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ سَبْعِيْنَ مَرَّةً فَلَنْ يَّغْفِرَ اللّٰهُ لَهُمْ) 9. At-Tawbah:80) Whether you ask forgiveness for them or do not ask (i.e., both things are equal).
