وَإِذَا مَآ أُنزِلَتْ سُورَةٌ نَّظَرَ بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَىٰ بَعْضٍ هَلْ يَرَىٰكُم مِّنْ أَحَدٍ ثُمَّ ٱنصَرَفُوا۟ ۚ صَرَفَ ٱللَّهُ قُلُوبَهُم بِأَنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ لَّا يَفْقَهُونَ ﴿127﴾
And whenever there comes down a Sûrah (chapter from the Qur’ân), they look at one another (saying): "Does any one see you?" Then they turn away. Allâh has turned their hearts (from the light) because they are a people that understand not.
وَإِذَا wa-idhā And whenever

سُورَةٌۭ sūratun a Surah
نَّظَرَ naẓara look
بَعْضُهُمْ baʿḍuhum some of them

يَرَىٰكُم yarākum see you
مِّنْ min any
أَحَدٍۢ aḥadin one
ثُمَّ thumma Then
ٱنصَرَفُوا۟ ۚ inṣarafū they turn away
صَرَفَ ṣarafa Allah has turned away
ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah has turned away
قُلُوبَهُم qulūbahum their hearts
بِأَنَّهُمْ bi-annahum because they
قَوْمٌۭ qawmun (are) a people
لَّا not
يَفْقَهُونَ yafqahūna they understand

127. 1. That is, when a surah would be revealed in their presence which pointed towards the mischief and conspiracies of the hypocrites, then seeing that the Muslims were not watching them, they would quietly slip away.

127. 2. That is, due to not reflecting and pondering over the verses of Allah, Allah has turned their hearts away from goodness and guidance.
