Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali
In order that Allâh may distinguish the wicked (disbelievers, polytheists and doers of evil deeds) from the good (believers of Islâmic Monotheism and doers of righteous deeds), and put the wicked (disbelievers, polytheists and doers of evil deeds) one over another, heap them together and cast them into Hell. Those! it is they who are the losers.

37. 1. This separation will either occur in the Hereafter, where the people of happiness will be separated from the people of wretchedness, as it is said: (وَامْتَازُواالْیَوْمَاَتُہاَالْمُجْرِمُوْنَ) (Surah Ya-Sin. 59) "O sinners! Today, keep yourselves apart," meaning from the righteous people, and the criminals, that is, the disbelievers, polytheists, and disobedient ones, will be gathered together and all will be thrown into Hell. Or, it may relate to this world, meaning that the disbelievers are spending wealth to hinder from the path of Allah, and We will give them the opportunity to do so, so that in this way Allah may separate the impure from the pure, the disbeliever from the believer, and the hypocrite from the sincere. In this regard, the meaning of the verse will be: through the disbelievers, We will test you; they will fight you, and We will also give them the ability to spend their wealth in battle, so that the impure may be distinguished from the pure. Then He will combine the impure with one another, meaning He will gather them all together (Ibn Kathir).
