لِّنَفْتِنَهُمْ فِيهِ ۚ وَمَن يُعْرِضْ عَن ذِكْرِ رَبِّهِۦ يَسْلُكْهُ عَذَابًا صَعَدًا ﴿17﴾
That We might try them thereby. And whosoever turns away from the Reminder of his Lord (i.e. this Qur’ân, - and practise not its laws and orders), He will cause him to enter in a severe torment (i.e. Hell).
لِّنَفْتِنَهُمْ linaftinahum That We might test them
فِيهِ ۚ fīhi therein
وَمَن waman And whoever
يُعْرِضْ yuʿ'riḍ turns away
عَن ʿan from
ذِكْرِ dhik'ri the Remembrance
رَبِّهِۦ rabbihi (of) his Lord
يَسْلُكْهُ yasluk'hu He will make him enter
عَذَابًۭا ʿadhāban a punishment
صَعَدًۭا ṣaʿadan severe

17. 1. This verse was revealed when a famine was imposed upon the disbelievers of Quraysh, الطَّرِیْقَۃٍ has also been interpreted to mean the path of misguidance.
