And to Thamûd (people, We sent) their brother Sâlih. He said: "O my people! Worship Allâh! You have no other Ilâh (God) but Him. (Lâ ilâha illallâh: none has the right to be worshipped but Allâh). Indeed there has come to you a clear sign (the miracle of the coming out of a huge she-camel from the midst of a rock) from your Lord. This she-camel of Allâh is a sign unto you; so you leave her to graze in Allâh’s earth, and touch her not with harm, lest a painful torment should seize you.

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

73. 1. These were the people of Thamud, who resided in Wadi al-Qura between Hijaz and Sham. In 9 AH, while going to Tabuk, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions passed by their dwellings and valley, upon which he ﷺ said to the companions: "When you pass through the region of a punished nation, pass through weeping, that is, seeking refuge from Allah's punishment." (Sahih Bukhari) Prophet Salih (peace be upon him) was sent to them as a prophet. This incident occurred after the people of 'Ad. They demanded from their prophet that he bring forth a she-camel from a rock, which they could see with their own eyes as it emerged. Prophet Salih (peace be upon him) took a covenant from them that if they did not believe after this, they would be destroyed. Thus, Allah Almighty manifested the she-camel at their request. They were strictly instructed regarding this she-camel that no one should touch it with evil intent, otherwise they would be seized by Allah's punishment. But these wrongdoers even killed the she-camel, and three days later they were destroyed by the punishment of the shriek (Sayhah, a loud cry) and the earthquake (Rajfah), leaving them lying face down in their homes.
